ferries to sicily? (genoa/livorno)

I feel a bit 'how much' after looking online - can they actually be £100+? please tell me of any secret ways of doing it more cheaply, otherwise might as well just fly straight there (is in Sept if that makes any difference, holiday booked before I got obsessed with Sicily)

It is quite a long way from northern Italy to Sicily so I'm not surprised at the fare price. I'd take an internal flight unless you fancy the ferry experience as a trip in itself.
