We're off for 3 weeks taking ds 14 and dds 11 and 10 packpacking in Greek islands, hoping to find accommodation as we go. Has anyone done this and got any tips? Will the kids miss their electronics? We're going back to our studenty mode of travel and I'm worried the whinging might ruin it. Appreciate any thoughts, thank you.

Get really good travel insurance, make sure you all drink enough water and have hats - could be incredibly hot. That's more likely to be source of whingeing than no electronics, I'd have thought.

My parents took me Greek island hopping when I was aged 8 and I remember some long waits for ferries so I would say spend some time checking out the ferry timetables.

Thank you both, very sensible advice, as we're off tomorrow I'll remember it:)

Ooh fantastic, I ran into a ?Continental family doing similar in Iceland in 1995. They had a 9yo soldiering up well :).

Let us know how you get on when you get home, are you flying there?

take some portable electronics, DS/mini dvd player/ipod touch or some such... you will need it on train journeys/bus/bioats etc and you'll be glad of it too.
I took DD backpacking in Italy and it was fantastic, holiday of a lifetime... wouldnt be able to do the same with DS too as he's not the right personality type....!

Sorry but have no advice but how have you organised the trip. Would love to do something along similar lines.

Hi all, sorry not been on for ages. If anyone's still watching this thread it went like a dream, three weeks in all late July-early August. I'm half Greek and fluent in Greek which is a huge advantage. We went flight only to Athens and stayed 2 nights in Athens hotel. Early morning train to Piraeus (port), tried to get on 7.30am Naxos ferry but it was full so jumped on 7am Siphnos one instead. Tough getting rooms on the spot, they were pretty busy. Over all stayed in 5 islands, Siphnos, Milos, Santorini, Anafi, Naxos. Beautiful water, views etc as usual. Learned to book rooms ahead via internet and phone calls. Some islands only have eg 3 ferries a week so take care not to be stranded. Mostly rented 2 rooms so kids in one and DH and me in the other. Happy to supply more info if anyone wants. Would definitely do it again, in fact have my eye on Vietnam/Cambodia next:)

Hello Curiouscat, just did a quick search on MN about Naxos / Milos / Santorini and found yours. We are off this summer (like you, late July, early August) with our toddler girl.
Any recommendations and/or dos/don'ts?

Thank you!
