Middlesborough to Tamworth overnight stay recommendations.

I am visiting North Yorkshire to see relatives with my DS aged 14 over the summer. On our way home to the south east, we intend on stopping in Tamworth to go to the Snow Dome.

I intend on staying in a Premier inn for the night and could stay in Tamworth, but I was wondering if it might be nicer to stay overnight somewhere else on the way home where we can have a half day visit too.

Somewhere with a bit of history would be good. So what are my options from Middlesborough area to Tamworth? We've done York, so would rather not stay there.

Skipton? Pretty place, ace castle, nice river walks. Bonkers Russian tea room

Creswell crags wouldn't be too far away and is interesting.
