What is your essential toy for taking on a journey?

Just wondering what toys everyone takes away with them when they go on a journey. Looking for some new ideas to keep the little ones amused.

Depends on the transport. Card games, usbourne sticker books, drawing things are good. We have magna doodles or whatever they are called in the car.

How old is the child and do you mean plane or car?

For a car DD is allowed a doll or cuddly toy plus we hear a lot of storytapes and music CDs. She gets travel sick quite fast so even looking at a picture book is a no-go.

Since she is 3 3/4 she likes playing I Spy.

Plane: again, doll/cuddly toy. Books and magazines. Pad of paper and cheap crayons you don't mind loosing

When DD was small the best toy to occupy her on a plane was the emergency landing leaflet. I think she was the only one in the plane ever studying it properly.

I am also a believer that a child can be bored once in a while.

I resort to dss, apps on ipod and DVD players to stop the squabbling

what age group?

it varies so much. mine haven't really ever had anything for car journeys (we chat, play story/nursery rhyme tapes sometimes, ISpy, etc).

plane journeys I swear by iPad/iPod touch, tbh. first invested in them for a trip to Australia (couldn't physically carry enough sticker books Grin), and they have been ace - favourite dvds and films, games, even storybooks all in one handy little gadget.

I had some great inset puzzles when they were younger though - will find them. packed up well, and compactly, and provided lots of opportunities for different things to do - the puzzle itself, little games and stories using the pieces as characters, playing odd one out/where does the X live language type games etc.

We had this one and
this one
