my friend is planning to live, and have her second baby, nr Budapest because her husband's work is taking them there. Are there any mumsnetters out there with any advice or with whom she can chat?

Budababe lives there I think.

hi Mommie

Yes - I live in Budapest. We've been here about 18 months. I have one DS who is in Reception in teh British School.

Am very happy to e-mail your friend if she has any questions.

Just generally - there are a few English language nurseries (how old is the older child?). Also a couple of baby-groups. There is a British Women's Association (sounds a bit colonial but I'm on the social committee so I can't say that!!!) which has a few coffee mornings and other social events.

A few ob/gyns - I can give her some numbers to talk to people for recommendations if she wants. The hospital where most people give birth is a bit like a 4-star hotel AFAIK although I have never been there.

Any other info just let me know!!

I will also try to get a friend of mine onto this site. She too is moving to Budapest in the Spring.

Hi Budababe

It's me who is coming out to Budapest on 27th March. Not long to go! Would love to pick your brain about play groups, obs/gyn, hospitals etc.

Have one DS of 16 months. Am looking at sending him to Plum Pudding.

We will be living in D12 Szendro Ut. Am told this is within expat area - hope so.

Any help/advice welcome....

Hi Luli

Looking forward to meeting you! You will arrive just in time to come along to the British Women's Assoc coffee morning on the 31st March. It's held in the British Embassy itself right in town - take a taxi as parking not great and you prob won't be confident to drive at that stage. 10am - bring DS - oh - and passport for ID. There are a couple of babysitters on hand too. It's a good way to get to know people.

Dist 12 - lots of expats live there - some lovely houses around there. I am in Dist 3 as that is near British school.

Haven't heard of Plum Pudding but will ask around.

Have you been to look around? Do you know what you are letting yourself in for??!! Weather will hopefully be getting better by then - had about 4 inches of snow on Sunday!

Are you shipping furniture etc? Or is your house furnished? I would stock up on over-the-counter medicines so you have stuff you are used to for the first few months. Most things available here.

Know lots of people who have had babies here so can find recommendations for ob/gyn. I use the Rosakert Medical Clinic - they have some good paediatricians, GPs, ob-gyns etc.

Any other questions - feel free!

sorry to hijack but just wanted to say that it is a beautiful place. My father in law came from Pec nearly 50 years ago (he fled on foot) and we took him back there 3 years ago as a surprise. Unfortunatley he didn't recognise much or speak much of the language but it was very emmotional and he loved it. the hotle was fantastic too.

BudaBabe · 08/03/2006 13:03

Wow helsi - that must have been an emotional trip.

Budapest IS beautiful. Esp when the weather is nice and everyong walks along the Danube and stops for coffee. Can't wait for summer!

Luli · 08/03/2006 13:49

Can't wait to get out - sounds fab. Apartment comes furnished so no need for masses of furniture but am putting a few bits of stuff on a truck which comes out next week.

Will definately come to the coffee morning and look forward to seeing you there budababe.

Helsi your Dad's story sounds incredible and how wonderful you could go on a trip back with him.

lapsedrunner · 08/03/2006 16:12

Budababe we could have a "Danube" mumsnet meet up, I'm in Vienna Grin.

BudaBabe · 09/03/2006 12:41

Hi Lapsedrunner - we come to Vienna for shopping! So a def possibility! In fact 2 friends are off to Parndorf tomorrow. I'm hoping to get to Vienna in the next month or so.

Luli - asked a few friends about Plum Pudding and discovered that one of my friends used it for both her children and was very impressed.

lapsedrunner · 09/03/2006 13:39

Ah yes, Parndorf Grin thats a place I like. Bizarre thing is that when I'm there I feel like I'm in one of their UK Outlets!

Luli · 16/03/2006 10:50

Stuff loaded onto truck which is now on its way to pick up fake weapons and then off to Budapest. Very exciting but I am knackered.....

mommie · 16/03/2006 11:00

Budababe not sure if you are still watching this thread but if you are is the coffee morning still on 31st? Arrived in Budapest yesterday and am exhausted but loving being here at last. Hope to see you on Friday. Guess I just ask for social sec?!

BudaBabe · 28/03/2006 18:22

Hey! Was wondering about you only today!

Coffee is def still on. It starts at 10 and I SHOULD be there by then. You need to come in main door and security guy will show you through - remember your passport - they may not ask but then again they may! The membership lady - Ann - sits in entrance. Ask her to point me out - I'm Fiona. I'll keep an eye out for you.

How is it going so far?? If you need anything in the meantime my e-mail is fionasimonds "at" hotmail . com.

Luli · 28/03/2006 18:49

Great looking forward to meeting some people as guess could get pretty lonely. Things ok so far. No car yet so will try out buses tomorrow. Don't see DH much but at least marginally more than if in UK. I am Lucy by the way....
