Flying with 2-month old on Air France

Hi
I'm taking my 2-month old from Israel to the UK (approx four hours to Paris, and then an hour and a half on to Scotland with three hour stopover) in a couple of weeks, and was looking for a few tips on travel.
I have heard that AF require you to check in a buggy and car seat (as opposed to gate check, i guess) and i'm worried about potential damage to both if I do that. Would seasoned family travellers recommend just taking a sling (baby bjorn)? I believe that Charles de Gaulle has buggies you can borrow, although they may not be suitable for baby smaller than 3 months, and my parents have a pram at home I could use, although i fear they only have a spare car seat for babies a bit older than mine.
Has anyone reading this checked in a car seat, and was it undamaged? Or has anyone experience specifically with AF, and was able to gate check the car seat? And what are your thoughts on slings for the duration?
Thanks in advance for thoughts..
