Toll gadget for France

On the recommendations on another thread In have subscribed to a sanef toll gadget for our upcoming holiday to France. I read all the terms etc and am still confused by 1 thing. I know invoice will be sent out 14th and then come off direct debit on the 1st following month, and it states this includes set up fees and charges. I take it this includes the refundable 20 euros for it?

It states you will get this back when you return the gadget but maybe Im missing something as we will return it straight after our weeks holiday and therefore it will be before direct debit comes off on 1 September for the deposit? Confused

duckdodgers assume that it will come out and that there will be an admin time. So you will be charged the deposit on 1 September then credited it back on 1 October.

Dont forget to send it back in the special envelope otherwise it will pick up a toll charge every time it goes though a toll barrier on the back of the courier's van!

Just remembered I changed my name in honour of my fav band playing T in the Park today, (Simple Minds), seemed appropriate because of the weather to!

have they changed the rules? we got one of these 2 or 3 years ago & there wasn't a 20 euro charge for it - we were invoiced (via credit card) for the tolls we used & have just kept the thingy in the special envelope ever since

we've changed cars so we don't have the windscreen holder any more - will they give us another one if we ask?

shesariver · 08/07/2012 08:28

Ponders its all direct debit now as you cant pay by card.

oh thank you shesariver/duckdodgers Smile

I didn't know there was an actual English site now, that's much easier!

I got mine from the French site, & they sent me an email earlier this year because the card I have registered was expiring & they wanted me to give a new one (at least I think that's what they said Confused)

We won't be driving in France this year anyway, I wonder if I should just abandon the old badge & get a new one from the UK site...? I will email them for advice, now I know they're there!

ah - clicked on the contact us page & at the top it says

Please note: Existing sanef France Liber-t Account Holders (both credit card and French bank account holders)

If you are an existing Sanef France liber-t account holder please contact sanef France directly for any queries relating to your account as Sanef Tolling cannot access your account details.

I'll contact the UK site anyway to see if I can get a new one (but maybe you can only have 1 at a time...?)

Is it in any way cost effective or is it just the convenience? How troublesome are tolls. Have only driven to Paris and back so wasn't an issue. Will be driving across to the Swiss border this summer.

nothingold we just did calais to bordeaux and back, we don't have the gadget and never had to queue more than a car or 2 so I'm not sure of the point really! Most have machines now so you just shove coins in and drive off.

Ponders · 08/07/2012 14:58

it doesn't save any money but it can be way quicker - well worth it IMO, you never have to worry about having the right money, or dropping some of it, or using your card, or dropping that. & you get an itemised statement which is always nice if you're anal like me

Indith, last time we went we regularly sailed past long queues waiting to pay, & that was in June - in July/August it would probably make even more difference.

the thingy also works in Vinci car parks in France (or it did last time)

shesariver · 08/07/2012 15:35

Never used one before but as we are travelling on Bastille day this year I think it will save us some time at the tolls!

Love Mumsnet! Thanks everyone, I had no idea you could get these gadgets and have now ordered one for our trip to the Dordogne. Fab
