Family of 4 to Cornwall for under £2k in August? Myth or reality?

We normally go to Cornwall in August for 6 nights but just looked at the price and its £2k for a family of 4 HB!? Its a lovely hotel and we always love it but thats expensive and with the weather at the moment I need some sun!!
So can it be done to take a family of 4 abroad for a week in August for £2k either AI/FB/HB? Or can anyone recommend a family friendly hotel near the sea HB in Cornwall for under £2k?!

Check out travel republic website for holidays abroad. I would look at Majorca or Portugal as the flights there are not to expensive. I think you could find a week with some meals included for 2k.

dreamingofsun · 06/07/2012 18:35

check out pembrokeshire - standard of accommodation for the money much better - except the coastal agency whose cleaners presumably have a phobia about cleaning. beaches lovely, similar, and much less crowded.

Dropdeadfred · 06/07/2012 18:38

Google 'barafundle beach' just one example of beautiful Pembrokeshire

ENormaSnob · 06/07/2012 20:40

There are loads of holidays abroad for 4 for less than 2k.

Check Thomas cook, travel republic and on the beach.

There are loads of self catering holidays in Cornwall for well under this price. stock up on waitrose or M and S ready meals and it is still cheaper! have a look at lastminute-cottages or try the tourist board where you want to visit. it is a bit late now for the UK but you might get lucky.

hollyround · 09/07/2012 13:46

Well I've spent the last few days scouring the internet and can't find anything for under £2k other than grotty hotels that all the trip advisor reviews say to stay away from! We are now looking at going in the October half term (as thought might be cheaper!) to the canary islands but flights are coming in at over £1000 for 4 and accomodation plus food/transfers are over £1000 for 4!!! Aghhh I've tried onthebeach etc but nothing under £2k and happy to book self catering if nice accomodation etc but with flights and car hire and food is so far very expensive!
Any suggestions before I just go on a sun bed and be done with it?!

If you are self catering would you not go for a cottage??

Fluffy1234 · 09/07/2012 15:49

There are some nice looking hotels on travel republic website in Greece or Balearics for 2k with flights. You are obviously not going to get top end luxury with that budget but good family friendly resorts.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/07/2012 15:54

We had a lovely cottage for 5 last year in Cadgwith for £800 - we ate out every day, only self catered breakfast really and got it in well under 2k - we ate at lovely pubs, including the one opposite the cottage, ate at a beach barbecue and at Roskillys (a lot) and at an amazing seaside fish and chip place in Coverack.

I really didn't want to go away and cook so was happy to splash out on nice meals.

linky to cottage website

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 09/07/2012 20:39

I wouldn't stay in a hotel.

These two are both very expensive but you could buy a lot of Waitrose meals and still not be at £2k

here

[[http://www.helpfulholidays.com/property.asp?ref=S213&year=2012 or here]

or this is cheaper - not gorgeous but stunning views.

Have you tried Sands in Newquay? Great for kids, really good value as only 3 star. We love it there

AngelsWithSilverWings · 12/07/2012 07:38

We go to The Porth Veor Manor every year but we stay in one of the villas that are situated around the swimming pool.

The cost is approx £1500 for the week and for that you get a modern , clean two bed villa with two bathrooms and very large open plan kitchen/living area that opens out to the pool.( I'm describing villa 1 - there is also a 3 bed villa but the living area is smaller)

We always stock up in Waitrose but there is a nice restaurant in the main hotel that does a nice breakfast.

It's close to Newquay but we tend to stick to the beach at Porth - 2 min. walk away through the hotel garden or Watergate Bay ( but our favourite beach is Porthcothan as the kids love the caves )

hollyround · 13/07/2012 09:03

Sands is where we normally go... have been for the last 4 years and really love it but this year we were quoted £1900 for 6 nights in one of the pool rooms (which we don't really like) I keep looking out my window at the constant rain and am so tempted to jump on a plane as spending £1500 ish for a week when its raining is just too depressing!!

Yes you very probably would get a a deal for around £2k in August and tbh this is one summer where as much as I love Cornwall I would be looking to go abroad.

Have a look at holiday hypermarket website. It searches several of the larer tour operators and reduced prices. Watch out for the extras they whack on top like luggage and transfers on SOME (not all) holidays.
Once you find something that appeals and have holiday hyoermarkets price then look at the tour operators website and check their price - sometimes it may look slightly dearer but is actually cheaper when you add on the luggage/transfers and all the other silly extras they add on.

I would go and find some sun, there are still quite a lot of self catering villas available . Have a look at Italy, Spain and probably Portugal. We have used owners direct in the past and had some lovely places. To me two thousand pounds is expensive for a week even if it is half board.

LauraHawkey · 16/07/2012 19:21

Hi, We've just booked for Cornwall - we have faith about the sun! If not we'll jus t stay in the sea! We've booked the Esplanade Hotel, we looked at Sands but was out of our price range too and the Esplanade has free family activities, pool, play areas etc and has good review on tripadvisor so we are going to give that a shot, fingers crossed!

hollyround · 18/07/2012 13:50

I have sourced somewhere in Cornwall for £1300 for 6 nights so the choice so far seems to be stay there where I know accomodation and food is great and risk bad weather, or go somewhere random ie not sure about accomodation/location/food but hopefully some sun from one of the on the beach type websites for £1800? I had a look at the Esplanade but i don't thimk they have any availability for when we want to go. So ladies, decisions!!

LauraHawkey · 20/07/2012 22:43

I'm the worst - I never want to risk a bad holiday going somewhere I dont know! I looked online as well when I was booking the Esplanade but gave them a ring and they were able to swap a few bits round and gave us some different options etc, they had a few offers on too. We used the stay for five nights or more offer and kids stay and eat free, but our friends who have booked but not for five nights have booked at £99 a night - hope you find somewhere!

TalkShowsOnMute · 21/07/2012 18:35

I would also thoroughly recommend Porth Veor Manor Hotel. We're going there for the third time in August - and we usually never go to the same place more than once!

Like a previous poster, we always stay in the Villas or Apartments - I think it's about £1345-ish for a week in August; if you check on the Hoseasons website, there's still plenty of availability throughout the Summer hols.

The thing I love about Porth is that it's close to the fantastic Watergate Bay and other amazing beaches, but far enough away from Newquay (though personally I quite like Newquay - shock, horror).

We've also stayed at Sands Resort and Watergate Bay hotel, but Porth Veor Manor is my favourite mainly because of the spaciousness of the accommodation.

RadioRentalMum · 21/07/2012 18:39

Must admit with 2 grand to spend I'd go abroad too, even in the accommodation is scuzzy at least you'll be more or less guaranteed some sunshine. Smile

hollyround · 23/07/2012 21:09

Ok ladies (and gentlemen!) I am now contemplating siblu/keycamps etc around the vendee area! Can anyone please suggest one?? xx
