Recommend anywhere other than Majorca?

We have travelled for the past 2 summers to Pollensa in Majorca. We do love it there (DC's are now 6 and 3) as there are lovely restaurants, a fab shallow beach and plenty of places to wander around. It does tick the boxes but there doesn't seem that much available (that isn't too pricey) for the last 2 weeks in August.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend another similar resort or destination? We like the fact it is a short flight with a not too long transfer. Definitely a lovely beach with shallow water is a priority for young kids. We have travelled to Portugal many times so would like somewhere else. I'm just concerned that Greece and Turkey will be too hot for my youngest in August. Any ideas?

I know it's not a big change, but how about Menorca? We absolutely love it and Owers Direct have always got some availabilty

Nerja in Costa del Sol, a family friendly resort, not too big and commercialised.

We really liked it there, but too be honest once you have been to Puerto Pollensa nothing compares!!

Menorca is totally different to Majorca (in a good way imo) and even though they are next door to each other OP, you might be amazed if you went there.

Son Bou has a 4km beach of fine white sand, shallow seas and is extremely gorgeous. The resort is pretty, not too busy but still with plenty to do and a wide selection of restaurants from authentic Menorcan to Chinese.

It looks like this:

Thank you for your tips. I should have added that we have been to Menorca (Son Parc) for a previous half term holiday. Weather was lovely but we found it too quiet for a longer holiday. I guess we like it a little bit buzzy in the evenings (not as though we can go out drinking but somewhere with an atmosphere).

I have never been to mainland Spain so Nerja sounds like it is worth exploring...

Son Parc is one of the quietest places on earth. The rest of Menorca isn't like that. But mainland Spain is lovely too. Good luck.

How about the Costa Brava? Some of it looks grim but the northern section is lovely. We had a great holiday in Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc a couple of years ago. It isn't cheap though - we hired a villa and did struggle to get anywhere at a reasonable price. Flight time to Girona is less than 2 hours.
We're also trying to decide on somewhere for end of August that isn't Puerto Pollensa! and also isn't a ridiculous amount of money. Tossa de mar on the Costa Brava is one place I've been looking at as that looks like a nice resort that isn't as pricey as Calella etc.
I would definitely recommend Nerja but I think it would be very hot in August...

Hi

Just wanted to say that we've been to Tossa de Mar twice recently (and we barely ever return to somewhere). Its great - very buzzy in the evenings, nice old town, good restaurants with reasonably priced set menus, fab castle overlookiing the beach. There are good deals to be had if you book hotels separately (I use booking.com) from flights and get a bus transfer from Girona. The beach does get busy though as its not that big, but you can take boat trips to other nearby beaches.

Have a look at Sitges....lovely Spanish town on fabulous beaches and with a marina. Great shopping and restaurants and not far from Barcelona...

Would second Nerja, Amuñecar or Palafrugell.

I would recommend Skiathos. Despite a 3.5 hour flight, most of the resorts are within 20 minutes transfer of the airport. There is a great bus service which will take you to the main chora and back so no need for car rental. Skiathos town is fab - think a mixture of traditional tavernas on quiet winding streets mixed with cocktail bars on the steps down to the harbour with bright coloured bean bags for seating.

Like Pollensa, the beaches are fab for little ones. And if you would like some recommendations for hotels/apartments please shout out. I rarely go back to the same place twice but this is my 3rd visit to the island.

Bellini12 · 02/07/2012 14:07

I'd love to go to Skiathos.... But am worried about the heat end of August. Is it unbearable? My 3 year old gets heat rash on a hot day in the UK!

Will defo check out the other options in Spain. I've been looking into Pollensa as a back up but the villa's are extortionate and besides we want to go for 10 days but most owners won't consider that. Very frustrating!

i took my dds aged 4 and 6 to pollensa 2 years ago and loved it for the same reasons as you! the following year we stayed at the Barcelo hotel in Cala d'or - it was lovely, right on its own shallow beach (cove) and near a selection of shops and a kids activity area (bouncy castles, trampolines, air hockey etc). Personally, i preferred Cala D'or- however some of the coves were less suitable for young kids so if you do consider it try to get near the one by the Barcelo hotel as it really was great for little ones.

sunnyday123 · 03/07/2012 07:52

we also did 10 days!
