Zurich - Things to do

I have the possibility of staying with a relative just outside Zurich during the summer holidays. We have done Switzerland before - stayed in Interlaken and it was fabulous - but if we stay with my relative will there be enough to keep us amused for a week without having to travel too far?

I am a bit crippled with arthritis so I cannot get up to much active stuff.

Depends where you would be based. If at the lake end of Zurich there is a good network of trains/buses, trams and boats for trips to get you aroudn easily (and on time!). Accessible places might include the Zoo, the Uetliberg high point, tour on the lake itself, visiting one of the lakeside "beaches"/parks or taking the train to Lucerne or a mountain resort such as Rigi or Flumserberg which are about an hour away. There is also a small waterpark near the Seedamm shiopping centre. If you are staying on the airport side then you'd have access to places such as the Rhine waterfalls and Basel otherwise you'd probably want to take the train into the city.

My relative bought a house (her half English blood coming out) near Rhinefalls I believe (her mother lives in Winterthur). We would drive there so would have the car.

We went up Rigi last time we were there and loved it, but then we went up a lot mountains and loved them all Grin.

I just didn't want them to feel they had to 'entertain' us everyday but we could go off and do stuff.

Thanks for the advice.

ah ok, that helps. From there also Lake Constance is worth a trip, there is a "low key" theme park with dolphins etc if that is appropriate (and still going!) -Connyland, and several Disney-style castles.

We've visited friends there a couple of times and absolutely love the zoo, and the boat trips. The zoo is definitely a whole days worth.

We also did a train trip to Lake Lucerne I think (the one with the medieval bridge) which was very enjoyable

Lucerne is wonderful - they have a mirror maze which we went to before DS was on the scene but I would imagine that children would love it.

Also in Lucerne are the Glacier Garden and the Transport Museum, with Mount Pilatus just outside the town.

Eek - I am not really a zoo person, or dolphins in theme parks.

But the mirror maze and the transport museum (for DH) sound great.

Thanks all.
