Hi. My DSis and her DP are looking to go away in July for a 4 night city break. She usually goes away for a week or two somewhere hot, but she lost her apartment in the riots last Summer and hasn't restocked her beach/holiday wardrobe yet! So she fancies just a city break.
They want somewhere with nice architecture and sightseeing, beach not essential. Good food and nice trendy bars a must. Good weather preferable.
They are thinking of Barcelona or maybe Jersey?
Any ideas or recommendations?
Thanks!

Madrid or Paris? Both are wonderful. Or Florence?

woopsidaisy · 20/06/2012 07:54

UKSky is Florence absolutely mental in Summer? I have heard that it and Venice are best avoided over the Summer due to the crowds.
She has been to Paris before, but I did suggest Madrid.
Have you been?

Lisbon.

Budapest is wonderful for a short break

Nice. Not really a city, but easy access to places like Monte Carlo, Cannes and St Tropez on train, and lots of beach too. Weather will be good.

Bruges is gorgeous, we had a 4 day break there last year.

Portofino · 20/06/2012 09:41

Nice (of course it's a city - one of the largest in France!!!), Barcelona, St Tropez, Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam, Krakow....Madrid will be ROASTING in July.

Portofino · 20/06/2012 09:57

Oh - and we went to Zadar in Croatia the other weekend - that is very nice (and cheap). Ryanair fly there now. Trendy bars and they have a lot of music festivals in the summer. Here

It is never too hot for my sister! She was in Greece a few years ago and it was in the 50s! People were coming home as they couldn't cope with the heat...she loved it!
I'll let her know the suggestions. Thanks.

Antwerp is gorgous. She could hop on a train to go to Brussels, Bruges and Amsterdam.

WowOoo · 20/06/2012 11:56

Prague is lovely. Very pretty. Budapest is lovely too, but getting expensive.

doradoo · 20/06/2012 14:04

What about marrakech?

Munich? Berlin? Vienna? All great in the summer and can be quite warm.

Sorry only just come back to this thread.

Yes I've been to Madrid for a long weekend and had an absolutely fabulous time.

There is some great architecture if they fancy wandering around.
Check out this website for the Top 10 things to see in Madrid.

I can really recommend:
The Royal Palace
The Prado Museum
The Thyssen Gallery

Although everything on the list is fantastic.

The weather will be lovely and there are great hotels to choose from and it's usually cheap to fly there with one of the no frills airlines.

Ohhh there's lots of places...

Madrid
Barcelona
Rome
Venice
Florence
Milan
Paris
Amsterdam
Munich
Berlin
