Particularly are there any lakes with beaches near by or good swimming pools.

Thanks

It's very very very hot there in August, up to 40c during the day, and still in the high twenties in the night. Air con is a must in your accomodation and in cars.
The town is deserted at this time, many people go on holidays then. Some shops and restaurants might be closed too.
Anyway, first beach is Narbonne (1.15 ish by car). In the town centre, last year they had Toulouse-plage in the prairie des filtres on the banks of the Garonne. Activities there everyday and giant sprays spraying mist to help you cool. It's great.
There is a piscine municipale but I haven't been in decades, probably not great me thinks.
There is the saint Ferreol lake (40 mns by car) you can sail there and maybe swim too.
It is a great town, I lived there for a bit a few years back.

Really 40!

We're visiting relatives for a week before going down to the coast, I know my dc will just be interested in water & swimming can you actually go in the river?

Oh yes, in town the heat is quite unbearable.
The only people swimming in the Garonne river are pissed students at night. Swimming is not allowed in there. There might be other pools apart from the council's outdoor swimming pool but I am not sure. Better check with your friends. There are some nice parks in the centre too, esp le jardin des plantes with a cool (and air conned) natural history museum.
La cite de l'espace ( space museum) might be another potential air conned activity for your kittens depending on how old they are.

There used to be waterpark on the outskirts called Aqualand. I am pretty sure it's closed now but it might have been replaced by something else of the same vein.

Take them to Carcassonne - the turrets allegedly inspired Walt Disney's castle symbol and it is also a wonderful day out with children - just arrive early is my tip.

It is just over an hour from the centre of Toulouse.

Wherebver you go, if there is a little tourist train (many carriages puled by a tractor disguised as a train) then give it a go. It will take you round all the sites and is great with children.

Ooh I'm going to be driving right through Caracassonne, I will have to check that out! We're planning to stop over in Toulouse for one night on our way to Perpignan

www.uk.toulouse-tourisme.com has helpful info.
I second Carcassonne, busy place in the summer but very worthwhile.
