Drayton Manor. You can often get two for one tickets, either on their site or others.

Drayton manor is good
You can use Tesco vouchers there too.
Gullivers at Matlock?
Isn't there one Leicester direction too, twin lakes or something it's called?

Sundown in Lincolnshire is great, it also has an indoor play area with a death slide. My daring dd (about 8 when we last went) went on it loads.

I'm not sure about how far away you are from Alton Towers but it seemed to have a good selection of attractions for different ages and the queueing was much much better organised that Drayton Manor ( shudders at the memory)

Chessington. Personally I would say the rollarcoasters at Alton Towers are still too scary. but an adventurous 7 year old could go on nearly everything at Chessington!!!

Depends on how tall he is, and your definition of daring...DD is 7 and 9 months, 1.3m and is in love with Thorpe park! There is quite a few scary rides she can do there- rush, detonator, etc-which put anything she can do at legoland and chessington to shame. We go to chessington a lot, we live 5 mins away, but there is only 2 rides, maybe 3 if you count monkey swingers, for daring kids of that age/height.
