NORMANDY D DAY BEACHES AND BAYEUX

Planning a little trip - any thoughts on which ferry port is best - Caen or Cherbourg?

If anyone has been to the area I would be grateful to hear your advice - also any accommodation suggestions!

Many thanks.

Caen is nearest to most of the major D Day sites and also to Bayeux.
Bayeux - I thought it far more interesting than I expected. There's an audiovisual guide which helps interpret the pictures. There's also a large British cemetary in Bayeux which is worth a visit.
Pegasus Bridge/Museum is very interesting (the British Airborne Division took the bridge just before the landings began).
The famous US cemetery (featured in Saving Private Ryan) is above Omaha Bridge - very thought provoking. Point du Hoq is another US site by Omaha Beach worth seeing - where the US Rangers took some gun emplacements on a cliff which were endangering landings on the nearby beaches.
Don't miss Arromanches (where there is a good museum and the remains of the Mulberry Harbour).
We stayed the other side of the Cotentin Peninsula so it was a long drive over to see the sites.

Thanks Lily. I was leaning towards Caen as it seemed nearer - just a longer crossing!!

And thanks for the other info - that's perfect!
