Should I book a holiday abroad if I could be pregnant by then?

Hi. Got a bit of a dilemma. Hubby and I are planning to start a family soon, but have booked a week off work in September together. We both really want to go away abroad to Greece - back to a hotel we stayed at before and fell in love with. We talked about a UK holiday but I don't think it'll be the same. But by then, it's possible I could be either 1 or 2 months pregnant (assuming we get pregnant immediately after trying). It's hard to know what to do. It might take more than the first couple of months of trying to get pregnant and it isn't an issue, or we might fall pregnant straight away!

On the one hand, we both need a break and it might help with conception, having some chill out time on the beach. On the other hand, I could be in the early stages of pregnancy and wonder if the flight could lead to a miscarriage. I read up quite a lot on it and it seems it's safe to fly on all the official health websites but they do mention that nausea might be worse and DVT and miscarriage are a risk. I guess if we didn't book to go away and we weren't pregnant by then, I would feel annoyed that we hadn't just gone away.

I suppose my question to any Mums out there is: would I enjoy a beach break if I was in the early stages of pregnancy, is morning sickness a bit tiring if you're abroad? Has anyone else flown when they're 4 - 8 weeks pregnant?

We'd delay starting a family a bit longer until after a potential September holiday, but I'm 35 so we're sort of thinking that time is of the essence.

Any advice please???

Book it, and keep trying to conceive. Perhaps you'll already be pregnant when you go, perhaps a week on a beach will do the job, perhaps you won't conceive for ages yet... life's too short to miss out. Enjoy.

When I was pg with ds, I found out when in the US, went to Serbia two weeks after that, Spain a couple of weeks after that, etc etc right through to a big US trip when I was 28 weeks.

Don't tie yourself up in knots about it

Do it. Why the hell not? If you are pregnant, just don't get pissed or eat your own body weight in foie gras. If you're not pregnant, you're more likely to get pregnant while relaxed on holiday. For what it's worth, I've miscarried on holiday and it was better than miscarrying at home (done that too) so even in the worst case scenario, you'll be fine. Sorry for the miserable tone, was intending to be encouraging. Have a lovely time.

Thanks for the tips! Think you've convinced me to go ahead and book the holiday. I guess I was worried if I miscarried abroad, what it might be like. But I think we'd be pretty lucky to fall pregnant in the first month or two of trying anyway. So we might aswell risk it and then what will be will be....

Oh I would just book it! We spent 20 months trying to get pregnant and if we had put off all the things we liked doing it would have been a bloody miserable 20 months. A lot of people aren't successful anyway so just enjoy living your life.

Book it. If you are pregnant by then your DH can make a fuss of you and if you are not you can have fun trying!!

I found out I was pregnant the day before a ski trip, doctor said it was fine! I went down black slope mogul runs and embryo survived and is now 3.

veggie77 · 07/06/2012 17:10

Thanks for the advice! I'm going to book the holiday now :-)

Another vote for just do it, we spent ages trying to get pregnant, so booked big holiday in Jamaica, turned out I was on holiday 8 weeks pregnant, apart from not being able to take full advantage of the all inclusive, it was lovely. It was acually really nice to take a break and relax in the early stages when you are not feeling at your strongest

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 11/06/2012 12:15

Book it!

I was abroad when I became pregnant with my first and I went on holiday when I was pregant with my second.

Just make sure you have travel insurance to cover if you do fall pregnant.

shrimponastick · 12/06/2012 10:26

Book it!

It may be the last break you and DH get alone for some time Grin

I flew a number of times when I was pregnant. Canada to UK when I was about a week pregnant. London to Copenhagen when 1 month pregnant. London to South Africa and back when I was 30 weeks. Think you should enjoy the time together as a couple. Don't think morning sickness would be worse abroad, in fact may be better when you have time to relax. If you are overly worried then speak to your doctor.
