How to get around Iceland?

Those of you who have been to Iceland.
What's the best way to do the Golden Circle with 4 kids in tow? Hire our own car, go in a big coach, or go in a smaller tour? We are there for 4 days and are staying centrally, so we've only got a couple of days of getting out and about. We want to do the Blue Lagoon and go whale watching as well.
Any other suggestions? The kids are 4,6, 8 and 10.

my parents took us when we were (I think) 16, 14, 11, and 9, and they hired a car. However, we were there for a week, and going to Akureyri, so it made sense. If you've only got a few days, I'd go on a coach or other tour. driving over there is quite hairy (we went across the middle of the country and got lost at one point, ended up on a glacier...).

I'm Envy at you going, I loved it there, best family holiday ever! the ponies are just gorgeous (pony trekking was my favourite bit), whale watching was fun, and we went to Myvatn and saw some volcanic sites too (were there for dad's work, which involved visiting lots of hot springs). We never made it to the Blue Lagoon, but other than that, it was brilliant.

Thanks for the advice. An organised tour does sound the most sensible- off to google :)

I love Iceland, desperate to take DC there one day!!
I cycled it in 1996, camping, some buses, too.
Would you consider a caravan? Going on the ferry via Faroes?
I have a feeling they still recommend 4WD for most of it, though.
Try to bring food in your luggage if you fly.

If it were me, I am inclined to think hire a car there & stay in their own version of hostels. Else can bring your own tent(s) & combine camping with hostels.

Just make sure you've got a pound for the trolley and keep your distance from twitchy people with neck tatoos in there. You should be fine.

Adventures We are only there for 4 days so will have to do the tourist things this time.

We went before the dc's came along. Not very helpful for you, but we hired a Land Rover Defender camper van. It was fantastic.

It was a few years ago, but I would still say hire a car. All of the things you mention are accessible by tarmac roads and from what i remember not a million miles from each other.

I am very jealous, it?s only a matter of time before we take our 3 over there (minus the camper van!)

I suppose research the tour option but also a car+self tour option. I'm sure it will be great, whichever you do.
