No-one else seems to have been! We went at Easter (DH and DD1 skied, so a different season). I just chilled around the hotel with DD2 (2 years old). We LOVED it. Try to get there before 1500 on Sunday as some of the kids activities (play etc.) have to be signed up for on Sunday afternoon. We speak German but there were quite a few English speakers and the childcare staff all seemed comfortable speaking it. Make sure you go to Salzburg for the day if you haven't been and everyone says that the salt mines in Bad Reichtal are ace.
We're definitely going back....
Let me know if you want to know anything else.

We loved the standard of food was very high! The hotel itself and the set up for children I found fabulous!
I won't spoil it by telling all!

We were also there at Easter and there were about 5 other english speaking families.
This is one of my favourite holidays ever.!

Can I ask how they serve dinner? DD always eats with us and the typical "children tea" and adult dinner was so far the reason to avoid hotel holiday with her.

Next year she will be 6 and I doubt she would be happy to eat separately. While I love our self-catering holidays I would like a week of pampering and I like what the hotel offers.

We went the Unken KH last year and we loved, loved, loved it. I wrote a long post about it on a different thread. Will see if I can find it for you ....

TheRedQueen · 31/05/2012 14:00

Noramum - you have a choice. They can either eat with you in the restaurant or have it in the kids' club. If they have it with you then it's self-service for the kids, i.e. no waiting for the waiter to bring the next course. Works well, I think.

TheRedQueen: which airport is the nearest?

TheRedQueen · 31/05/2012 16:08

Salzburg, which is about 45 minutes' drive away. I think the hotel may also have its own shuttle bus to and from Salzburg Airport.

Other than that, Munich Airport, which is around 2 hrs' drive away, depending on the route you take. I'm not familiar with Innsbruck Airport, but I estimate that it must be around the same distance drive away as Munich.

Much will depend on the traffic on the day though ....

TheRedQueen · 31/05/2012 16:11

Yes, there is a shuttle bus. See here:

We've not stayed at the Unken Kinderhotel but have stayed at others (Alpenrose, Loewe) when the children were younger and have LOVED it - great child care, lots of activities, lovely spa/pool and excellent food! Great family holiday!

I'm interested in the Sporthotel, having looked at its website from this thread, but can't tell from the website map (am feeble) how close it actually is to the Achensee. Being a childhood Chalet fan, and having previously had a lovely holiday on the Achensee, I'd like to be within walking distance of it again but it looks like some distance away?

Other than that, we will have an 18 month old in October, when we're looking to go. What's the childcare like for that age group? We wouldn't put her in very often I don't think as we'd like to spend time with her, but the odd morning in the spa wouldn't hurt!

StiffyByng - we went to the Sporthotel Achensee in Apr 2011 (with an 8 year old). Had a fantastic time, it is within walking distance of the lake but it is a healthy walk, not a short stroll. You can see the location on google maps, it's about 1.5km.
