Portable car seats and pushchair for plane travel

Hi all,
I have a three and 1/2 year old and a 1 year old and we travel quite often by plane. I'm not happy to use hire car companies' car seats as they're often not in good condition and prefer to bring their car seats in the hold on the plane. I need to get a Group 2/3 seat for my oldest daughter. Can anyone recommend one that is portable and that shouldn't get too damaged in the hold of a plane? We normally check our car seats in the hold of planes but I've been reading that it's not a good idea and that we should take them on to the actual plane and fix them to the seats (which sounds like a nightmare to me!) - any advice?!! We're also looking for a sturdy umbrella pushchair for our one year old that is portable (ideally with travel bag) - any recommendations very gratefully received. Thank you.

We use the Maclaren Volo. It doesn't recline but it's light and dh likes the height of the handles. For car seat, we got this www.travelswithbaby.com/gear/review_ridesafer.htm. I stuffed it inside the carry on and great for taxis. Is the a UK version of the ridesafer here?

We have just bought the Trunkies one - that folds away into a backpack that your child can also use as their hand luggage for the plane. (They can fit quite a lot in it as well as it then becoming the car seat.

It's great. We've already used it at home in taxis and in other friend's cars.
