Urgent passport advice (London to Jersey)

Can I safely take my 6 year old son on a flight to Jersey if he doesn't have a valid passport? I'll have mine & he can bring his old one (expired last year but baby photo that looks nothing like him!) plus his birth certificate and we have the same surname. We can't renew it in time to travel & the only advice on BA's website say not essential but recommended to take photo ID and obviosuly he doesn't have any other photo ID!
Do I risk it?

Ring the airline. Jersey is strange as it is part of UK, but not part of EU. In theory a passport is not required, but in practice it is up to the airline to decide what sorts of ID are acceptable to it. Awkward one.

The other place which might be able to help is the Jersey tourism office: (01534) 448 800 www.jersey.com

Oh, and if you do get a 'go ahead' from the airline, ask for confirmation by email and print it out to take with you. And allow oodles of time to check in (which you will need to do at a counter, as non-standard certainly won't work on a machine)

I regularly fly to/from the channel islands with DS 8 and DD 6. They have never had passports or photo ID and never been a problem as they are classed as domestic flights so the rule is that the accompanying adult will vounch for the child's identification. Enjoy your trip to Jersey :)

Yes i live on jersey and my kids never need any photo id. For adult you need either passport or driving licence as acceptable id. If you are paranoid, take hs birth cert. have fun! X
