France -where's lovely for few days en route to South?

We are heading to the Med/cote d'azur and want to add a few days at the start of the hol. We could do it as one stopover for few days somewhere half way-ish from Calais which would mean round Dijon roughly. But what's it like round there - is burgundy a nice area? Or where else in that neck of the woods is lovely?
Or, I am tempted to stay somewhere we know will be lovely (eg Dordogne) for 3 or 4 days, which would obviously add several hours to our overall travelling - don't mind that really. I suppose there's no point staying extra days somewhere that isnt' lovely!!

Has anyone done anything similar?

Beaune is very nice - not far from Dijon. Last year we stopped off at La Source Des Fees - a chambre d'hotes just off the A6 near Macon. It was gorgeous - great food, free wine tasting....I shall try and find a link...

In Beaune, we stayed here. Twas lovely, with secure parking and a lovely courtyard for drinks/breakfast.
