Has Anyone Taken A Long Haul Flight With A 6 Month Old

We are hoping to go to Florida in december this year, by which point, (if all goes to plan) our baby will be 6 months old. We're not going for the rides luckily, don't worry we're not crazy, we're going to have a relaxing Orlando holiday and go at a slower pace.
Has anyone else taken their baby on a long haul flight? was it ok?

Took 8 mth old to Asia. He was fine - flew at night so he slept anyway - not sure you can do that to Florida though!

We took DD1 when she was 7 months, then DD2 when she was 5 months.

Both times were better than I hoped!
I dreaded it as it's such a long time, but we were fine.

We had a sky crib the second time, and DD2 slept most of the time.

Request the bulkhead seat as you have more space. The cabin crew have alsays been great with us, and moved other people to give us more room etc.

Meant to say we went to LA both times, so same direction!!

I took my DD at 4.5 months to NY (5-6 hours). Flights weren't too bad, especially with the help of the in-flight bassinet. What's harder is jet lag. I'm getting ready to take DD (will be 7 mos) for now a 10-hour flight with a 7-hour time change and sort of dreading that. But alas, can't live in fear of baby jet lag!!! Good luck. Stay relaxed. And yes, generally flight crew are quite helpful (I'm particularly fond of BA).

Took ds to Australia when he was 6mths. Flights were much better than I expected. We timed the flights so it would be mainly night-time to maximise the amount of time he slept on the journey. Make sure you book the bassinet well in advance. I think 6mths was a good age to take my ds, much bigger and he wouldn't have fitted in the bassinet!

SO glad you started this thread! We're taking our (by then) 7 month old to Canada in May and I'm DREADING it! (oh wait, maybe i'm just dreading seeing my family....)

Anyone flown on a THomas Cook flight with a wee one?

We went to the Seychelles when dd2 was 5mths old. Flight out was horrendous as she was overtired and screamed for ages before falling (fitfully) asleep.

Flight back, much better as it was earlier and coincided roughly with her usualy bedtime, so she went to sleep fairly easily.

We had a bulkhead both times and a bassinet with made life easier.

I flew to Thailand when DD was 15 months and it was fine. She crashed out and slept the whole way in her babygro and reclining car seat.

When I flew to Australia with her at 2.10 years - now that's an entirely different story that I won't scare anybody with!

All the way from NZ to Manchester - it was fine. I wouldn't fancy it now ds is 3.

took dd1 to Aus when she was 8 months old.

she was brilliant - we had two night flights - late afternoon out of Heathrow then brief stopover in singapore and another night flight into Aus.

We simply put her in her pjs and sleeping bag when we got on the plane, fed her - put her down in the sky cot and she slept almost the whole way through to Singapore ( 13 hours) then took her out of sleeping bag and played for the brief time we were on the ground in Singapore then same thing - sleeping bag and she slept through to Brisbane - 7 hours.

SHe did have a crying fit about 2 hours after we landed in Aus - however there were a lot of people to meet us at the airport and at my mum's - first time relies had seen dd1 so I think a lot of that was simply that she was overwhelmed.

We had a sky cot each time.....

THere are a number of threads with great advice in teh archives if you have time to do a search.

We did LA. Jet lag is worse than the flight as others have said, LOL. Take EXTRA milk (they get dehydrated and drink more than you can imagine). Take EXTRA nappies (see milk). Take change of clothes for you too in case of upchuck.
