Menorca for a week - What do we do about Nappies & Sterliser? :)

OK. I am back again! Just found out our apartment has 2 ring cooker but no kettle or microwave. We are taking a travel kettle so that's ok but wanted to take microwave bags to sterilise bottles. Now we are a bit :/ unsure of what to do. Milton tabs and sink? Or just soak bottles/teats in boiled bottled water?

Also, should we try and get 1 weeks worth of nappies in a case or can you buy nappies in Arenal d'en Castell, Menorca? Have heard there's not many supermarkets so might not be able to get nappies in right size...

Thanks for any help with this one :)

When we went to menora we took a supply of nappies to last - they were very expensive in the shops. As for sterlizing we cold water sterilized by using milton tablets and a large plastic tub (from £1 shop) which you can fill with stuff whilst in your suitcase and we just left it in our apartment when we came home.

CointreauVersial · 11/05/2012 13:42

Ditto the idea of a plastic tub and Milton tablets. You can also buy single-use sterilising bags which you just hand off a doorhandle, or similar.

I'm sure nappies will be available, maybe not a brand/size you might normally use but you'd get by.

I have been to Arenal d'en Castell but it was 28 years ago, so my memories of supermarkets might be a little hazy/outdated!!

How old is your child? When we took DS abroad at 10 months, I boiled the kettle to wash, sterilise bottles. He was fine Grin and yy to nappies being expensive abroad.

there's a company in Mahon who do rental of baby equipment - we've had a cot and highchair from them before. The island is so small I'm sure they cover Arenal d'en Castell but of course I can't remember the name...

KatieMiddleton · 11/05/2012 13:50

Take nappies. They can be extremely expensive in Spain.

Cold water sterilisation with Milton tabs is really easy but I also recommend you take a bottle brush and small amount of washing up liquid in a screw cap bottle to clean the bottles. You don't want to be hunting for such things out there instead of enjoying yourself.

When we've gone abroad with a baby we have always had a suitcase full of nappies and powdered formula. We also make sure to have at least one bottle and cleaning equipment, formula and a couple of days worth of nappies in hand luggage.

There are approx 5/6 supermarkets in Arenal, but as with all resort supermarkets, things are much more expensive. There are several hyper-markets in Mao and Ciutadella, and a big Spa in Es Mercadel, but unless you are hiring a car, that might be tricky.

For the sterilising, I would use boiled bottled water.

A point to note is that, although your tour operator will insist that the local water is not safe to drink - that is a load of tosh. Spain is equally as advanced (if not more so) than the UK, (if you have to visit a hospital, you will see what I mean Grin) and the tap water is perfectly drinkable for adults, it just has a different mineral content to the UK.

Thanks for thegreat advice. Think I'll go for the milton and £1 shop container. I can see me ending up with suitcases full of nappies, formula and baby paraphernalia and forgetting to pack my own knickers :D

You can also buy sterelising bags from boots which are really sim

Sirzy · 12/05/2012 11:55

Pressed send to soon. Simple to use and don't take up the space a bucket would in your case.

KatieMiddleton · 12/05/2012 12:08

You dont need a separate container if there's a plug in the kitchen sink you can just steralise in there. I think it's a min of 15 mins and max of 24 hours for cold water sterilisation but dh does the steralising.

We flew when DS was 11 weeks old to a wedding. We had a case of washable nappies, breast pump, bottles etc and we were in the UK. I forgot to pack make up, jewellery and enough knickers for me Hmm

Ooo where are you staying? i am just pricing up menorca for June and keep coming up with the aguamarina in arenal but the prices keep varyign on different rooms but there is no room description to decipher. Anyone been?

diabolo · 14/05/2012 19:41

The Aguamarina is a hotel in Arenal D'en Castell. Beach front location, edge of resort, evening entertainment, tennis courts etc.

It looks a bit like something from Prisoner Cell Block H, but actually is a decent cheapish place to stay. I gather it's AI option is particularly good value. If you are in need of a bargain it is probably a great option. (All hearsay - no personal experience)

If you prefer SC then the Arepar Apartments, Sol Isla, or Sa Mirada are prettier. The aparthotel Isla Paraiso (which I believe also does AI as an option) is much nicer, prettier, smaller and still has loads to do. I've stayed at all of these bar the Sa Mirada, and can vouch for them.
