After getting stuck at Bristol last year for over 2 hours crawling along in the August traffic have decided to leave mega early.

What's he best time to get to Bristol (This seems to be the problem area) to beat all the traffic.

We are travelling from East Midlands, and usually takes us 2 hours to get to M5

avoid being anywhere near Bristol 7am - 10am and between 3.30pm and 7pm and that should help!

Ragwort · 07/05/2012 21:29

I usually get through Bristol around 6.30am with no problems - would that be too early a start for you Grin? My brother always goes late at night but personally I prefer a really early start. Smile.

oh and always check for any particular festivals/surfing events in cornwall/devon around the days you want to travel. the traffic from run to the sun is ridiculous.

Queenofcake · 07/05/2012 21:31

No later than 6am IMO.

lagoonhaze · 07/05/2012 21:36

Its because everyone is travelling on same day! Can you come down a day early and stay extra night in a travel lodge?

tiredmumma · 07/05/2012 21:39

cripes...that would mean leaving around 2am - get to M5 at 4am, then Bristol is about another hour and a bit so 5.30/6am

gosh thinking how else we could do this - perhaps staying in a travel lodge Friday night near Bristol - couldnt do late night trek

Not for everyone I know but we travel late, get to Gordano services just past Bristol on the M5 about midnight and sleep in the car until early morning. There's an overnight fee of about £15 iirc. On the road again by about 8.00am and don't encounter any traffic problems.

ivykaty44 · 07/05/2012 21:48

get to the gordano services at 5 and you will be fine

ivykaty44 · 07/05/2012 21:49

whta junction do you get on m5? Its an hour and a quarter from 8 to 17 without speeding

tiredmumma · 07/05/2012 21:53

have decided to go down Friday and stay at Days Inn at Bristol Junction 19 and sounds ideal - fab reviews on trip advisor as well - £50 sorted!!!

Good idea to avoid saturday. The last couple of years when we went to cornwall DH found sunday-sunday bookings..

We also used to leave cornwall at about 3 or 4 am.

eatyouwithaspoon · 07/05/2012 22:00

Fridays coming into Cornwall are pretty bad too, I live there so get stuck in the imcomming traffic.

tiredmumma · 08/05/2012 10:39

eatyouwithaspoon - I meant we will stay over Friday then get up at 5am onto M5 at Bristol and head into Devon then - no rush as cottage isnt ready until 2pm
