Hotels just outside Edinburgh - any suggestions?

DP and I are going to Edinburgh for a week in September. We're hoping to stay a little bit outside the city to keep costs down, and because we're driving up and I imagine it'll be easier to park up outside the city and get public transport in, rather than park for a week in the middle of Edinburgh...

Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels? Not too expensive if possible, but it's only in the planning stages at the moment so if the accommodation works out costing a lot we can budget a bit elsewhere :)

We stayed in a lovely little b&b guest house thing called Kilmaurs but it was about 15 years ago Grin

My Mum & Dad stayed here once, and liked it. Buses are very regular from Musselburgh to Edinburgh. In fact, you might not be far away enough... but worth investigating!

September should be pretty cheap (relatively) as the festival chaos will be over. September belongs to the people as the crazy festival goers are away and the students aren't back yet. You can hear the city breathe a sigh of relief :) That first week in Sept is my favourite time to live here although the rest of the year is pretty amazing too.

I would prob suggest Leith, Portobello, Cramond or Barnton areas as they all have free parking and good buses and are pleasant. Leith has a lot of night life, Portobello and Cramond have the sea and Barnton is handy for getting out of town and going to Glasgow! Or there is a Holiday Inn on Queensferry Rd where you might get a good deal and they have a car park and it's close to Stockbridge which is a really lovely area...

What sort of thing are you looking for? I love this hotel www.oroccopier.co.uk/ - it's right down at the water's edge with views over to Fife and not far into the city (either by bus or train). There is also www.dakotahotels.co.uk/hotels/edinburgh/.
Or you could go right into Fife - you can get from Dunfermline to Edinburgh by train in about 35 minutes and it would be a great base for exploring the rest of Fife too. I haven't actually stayed here www.booking.com/hotel/gb/roomsatbrucestreet.en.html but have heard it's very nice (although there is a warning about noise at weekends).

Oh thank you all! I will check out all the links tomorrow :)

just, not really sure what we're looking for (unhelpful, sorry). DP has said, "I'd like to go horse riding on the beach." He's never ridden a horse in his life and doesn't like sand Hmm

Have a look at North Berwick? Really pretty, and a train ride to Edinburgh.
