First time abroad for kids - where to go in summer hols

Thinking about taking the kids away to Europe in the school summer holidays. This would be their first non UK holiday so ideally it needs to be somewhere not too hot and not too expensive.
DD is 6 and DS is 5. Our holidays so far have been Devon, Cornwall and Northumberland. All fantastic and the kids have really enjoyed but I'm starting to wonder if we could get a break away for similar money - just had a quote back for £2k for a 2 week August break in Northumberland (a house we've stayed in before and the owner has discounted £1k off the advertised rate for us but still very Shock
Pre-kids our holidays were always hot and beach based so I've got no idea where to start.

Can anyone offer any suggestions of suitable resorts or accomodation?

How about the South of France coast. We used to drive there and stay at Eurocamp or somewhere similar in a large static caravan or tent....

I quite fancy the camping / static idea. DP might take some convincing though.

Is it a really long drive? We live in the North so I'm guessing it's going to be a bit of a trek?!?
