Can you recommend any places or areas or resorty hotels good for families which are more contemporary no chintzy thanks yet not exorbitant prices? Budget c.$150 night and pref somewhere with rooms that have sep lounge or bedroom bit so baby can snooze & me & dh can relax etc without waking him!

Try some ski resorts. They will no doubt change over for the summer season and will appeal to most budgets.

We have stayed at www.smuggs.com and it was a dream holiday. We did go for the top price accommodation, largely because the £ was so strong that year, but there were lots of more budget accommodation available (and in more central parts of the resort).

This place is in Northern Vermont, near Burlington, but still only 4 hours from Boston. There are many ski areas much closer to Boston too. A lot of American families just go for 3 or 4 days (from Boston, NY and further), so not a strange thing to do with just a few days available.

we stayed at Sterling Ridge, (sterlingridgeresort.com/)

very close to the recommendation above. It was very relaxing, and lots of people only stay there for a few days. It's a fifteen minute drive from Stowe which has shops and cafes and a small supermarket nearby.

I think they were doing a massive expansion of Sterling Ridge when we were there. I remember seeing it all from our day in the mountains on the chair lift.

It is a fab area - Stowe is a lovely town.

I often think that if were were to settle anywhere in the world, that area would be up on the list.
