Has anyone holidayed in Northern Spain? Would you recommend it in August? Hotel or self-catering? Any info gratefully received!

Asturias is beautiful but can be very wet (although we were there in May). Picos de Europa mountains are gorgeous so plan some walks.

I think self catering would be fine - we tend to always do this in Spain

Where did you find your self catering place lemniscate? Is there a company you'd recommend?

We actually stayed in a b and b in
Asturias but it was8 years ago do I wouldn't recommend in case it's changed. We usually use owners direct for Spain ad there is a good choice.

we went a couple of years ago, took our car on Brittany Ferries crossing to Santander. cantabria was gorgeous - visit Oyambre beach and San Vincente de las Barqueras, both charming. Also fab cablecar ride up into Picos mountains, near Potes - get here early tho as big queues. Santander itself is lovely, nice shops, promenade, fab massive beach, very stylish. Santilliana 9 medieval town) was a disappointment - very touristy. THT

I can recommend Brittany Ferries holidays - they have quite a few self catering apartments or apartment/hotels in Asturias/Cantabria. See their website. We stayed in an apartment complex two years ago just outside a very pretty town called Comillas which has a nice beach, tons of lovely restaurants and great scenery and countryside around. We went in September and it was very pleasant temperature-wise, although the Bay of Biscay is quite brisk for swimming (but the pool at the complex was bearable.) The apartment was fairly plain, not luxurious but comfortable, clean and well equipped Would think August would be quite hot but not unbearably so. Comillas is about 40 minutes drive from Santander. In fact we're going back again this year, although to a different town, slightly nearer Santander. Also the 24 hour crossing is pleasant and relaxing. And it's great having your own car.
