We are trying to get our heads round heading out to the States next Easter to have a family holiday (at the beach) with my SIL and her family who live in NYC. Whilst DH and I have had great holidays in Maine and Florida we are thinking logistically flying in to NY and not going too far would be best as children wise we will have our DD who will be 6 and 3 year old twins while my nephew and niece will be 4 and almost 2. Would love to hear recommendations of places to base ourselves/houses to rent. Many thanks.

Easter is normally cold here in NJ and not the easiest time to book a beach trip as the shore is normally shut still. For New Jersey I would recommend Cape May, North Shore for Long Island or the Hamptons if your budget allows. Anything further north than that is going to be too cold.

You might find that the Catskills and Poconos have more activities during the Spring.

If you really want that beach trip I would recommend you come over in September after Labor Day. Jersey Shore is still open and lots to do. I prefer the weather in September to July and August. If you come this time of year many more towns have things going on. I like seaside heights. Just avoid Belmar and you will be fine.

Thanks supermum - Cape May looks like just the kind of thing we had in mind - when I said beach I just meant to be near the sea and wrapped up warm rather than a sunny beach holiday so it looks great.

Why not fly to DC and go to Virginia Beach - the weather will be great, lovely beaches and within range for visits to places like Williamsburg and Yorktown etc for the history. Look on Homeaway or similar for beach houses to rent
