Kefalonia in May

DH and I want to go away for a week in May. I was doing a bit of research last night and Kefalonia popped up. It looks lovely.

Does anyone out there have any experience?

We normally like exploring and mooching about (on beaches, around ruins and markets and things) with a bit of relaxing and book reading chucked. Normally like self catering cottage option in UK as we're not overly sociable but it looks like this might be quite a bit more expensive/hassle so will consider hotel package thing.

Thanks in advance!

kefalonia is fab. It's relatively far north so it won't be THAT warm, at least early in May. I went a few years ago around 3 May and we didn't swim in the sea or strip off on the beach.

Centre of the island is just glorious and especially wonderful in May with lots of flowers.

Not a whole lot of cultural 'sights' per se due to the earthquake in the 50s but we still really enjoyed our week. There are natural wonders to be seen and nice places to go.

Stayed at the Gonatas Hotel I think, travelling with Sunvil (was a lot richer then) - very much recommended in both cases.

we went there years ago, in june i think. thoroughly enjoyed it. agree, like many greek islands not overun with cultural sights, but nevertheless a pleasant place to go for a week or 2

Kefalonia is gorgeous.

Love Kefalonia, we go to Skala every two years. We stay at Nine Muses on the sea front, bars, tavernas, some shops easily walkable to. There is a roman villa with mosaics there as well. You can get a boat trip to the island of Ithaca from the beach which is always worth it.

I agree that the sea might be a bit cold in May, and you can't guarantee sun these days, (we've had rain in May there) and when we went last Sept they had a freak heatwave 38 celcius and not much cooler in the evenings!

Fiskardo is beautiful, in fact I love the whole island. The underground lake is a must-see also.

Gorgeous place.

have a look at ionianislandholidays.com Have been twice with them to this part of Greece - Meganisi and then Kefalonia. Going to Corfu later this year with them too. I think they are pretty good and I think we got a good deal this year - maybe because people don't want to go to Greece atm because of uncertainty.

Thanks everyone - really helpful.

Have decided on Nine Muses in Skala as the hotel and resort gets great reviews. Just need DH to get his finger out so I can book!

mrsflower, you won't regret it!

If you like traditional greek food, I can recommend Socrates taverna in Scala. The grandmother of the family supervises the preparation of her own recipes, and they are just like home-made.

Also don't tell mrflower, but Veronicas jewellery shop has some gorgeous things!

Hire a car. Glad DH was driving as a bit hairy at times, but go to Assos, Fiskado, Myrtos beach, Antisamos beach.
Underground lake beautiful.
Capital town (can't remember name worth a visit)
It's a pretty big island but really is beautiful.
We stayed in Sami which was nice.
Went in October, a couple of years ago and weather was not brilliant, but paid to go on a coach (pretty small coach, not much bigger than minibus) but saw a lot in a day, with a brilliant (British) guide who knew a lot of the islands history.
