Making a map for a group trip. Anyone?

A group of us - 16 in all - are off for a long city break weekend to celebrate a 40th soon. I know the city really well - Edinburgh - and I'm doing up notes on recommendations. You know, cafes, good bars, delis, museums etc.

What I want to do is back up the info with a street map with all the destinations marked on and labelled. Have anyone ever done such a thing? I can find way of making labelled online maps, but not printed ones. I'm currently wrestling with OpenStreetMap, but its not easy. If you are bit thick, that is...

Can you take the image of the map you want to use, put it into your favourite program for handling images (Powerpoint or Word might be OK) then label using text boxes and arrows?

That'll give you a map that's easy to email round/print, although you will obviously no longer be able to zoom in and out.

I've used cleverer software for this, but its expensive for your project!

Thanks MrsHoarder. After a lot of faffing, I'm doing a similar thing but with GoogleMaps. Map in the middle with markers on it, list at the side with descriptions. I'll print them off and hand-draw lines. Very controlling of me - you will have fun THUSLY!
