we're looking at a couple of their coastal resorts in france but i don't know whether we could a) get there and b) not feel 'stuck there' if we go by public transport. Would love to hear any views on this.

Even a v near coastal village would help. will have dh & our 4 yr old & 12 month old so walking long distances not really a goer.

Some hire bikes with seats and trailers and may operate a mini train to enarest town/beach. Access will vary from one to another but suspect many are best reached by car. We went to one in Normandy which was near a local station and beach but not that close to town centre.

Ile de Re is very good for that - you can fly to La Rochelle and the whole island is flat and covered in bike tracks so cycling is really easy. We didn't stay in the Pierre et Vacances place, but it looked lovely!
