We live over seas and my passport expires in Sept this year, we intend travelling to the UK in July and I want to renew it there as it will be cheaper to do the 1 day service than to send it to Dusseldorf which is where they now process UK passports from over seas!!! (and no, we don't leave in Germany or Europe for that matter Hmm ) our host country no longer offers passport renewal service.

The question is, how long should I have left on my passport to enter the UK?? I know when I travel to the US for instance that you have to have at least 6 months left on your pp. Have just tried the passport office in the UK and the chap that answered the phone didn't know Confused

Oh wise mumsnetters please help, thank you

I think if you are a UK citizen visiting the UK you will have until the very last day written in your passport.
The 3/6 months validity for entering countries is to avoid "foreigners" being stuck without passport on your territory.

thanks bran, I thought it should be ok but I didn't want any problems on arrival and also wanted to save a couple of hundred pounds renewing it Grin

Actually if you are a British Citizen they let you back in even if your passport is expired, but with very stiff warning about renewing.

Are you sure you will save a couple of hundred pounds? We recently renewed ours, via the Paris embassy. I believe they now handle all of Europe. Total cost including courier (which is obligatory) was £185 so I don't see how you could save £200+
