thinking of a shorthaul hol in oct half tyerm and week before or after but will it be freezing everywhere?
i dont want it too hot or expect a tan or anything, just warm enough to swim and play with kids.

Majorca averages about 18 degrees in October which I think would be warm enough for what you want? And great for families there. It takes about 2 hours to fly there. If you were happy to fly 4 and a half hours then the Canary Islands are a popular choice for October half term as they will be around 21 degrees still

Cyprus also worth considering, we've been there in Oct halfterm and had a lovely time.

thank you both, well we were lookign at portugal last night and found nothing. did see a few in majorca/menorca/ibiza and will now look at cyprus but i thought that was a 4hr flight?

We have been to Tenerife two years running at October half term. Lovely weather early 20s, great for kids.

Yes, Cyprus is a 4 hour flight. Portugal I would have thought would be a bit cold/wet then, even if you can find something.
