Youth Hostels

I've just booked us 5 nights in a youth hostel in San Francisco - am I mad??? I loved YH'ing until I went to university; dh has never done it ( ). We will have 2 private rooms - twin and double which we couldn't have afforded in a hotel and hopefully a bit of company of an evening once they've gone to bed. Tell me it will be good!

It will be good! Dp and I stayed in one in Dublin a few years ago and it was better than many so-called hotels we'd stayed in. And the other hostellers were great - you get to talk to people rather than having everyone studiously ignoring each other like in "proper" hotels.
Go for it, it'll be fab.

We spent our honeymoon in various youth hostels (private rooms though!) and we absolutely loved it. It's cheap, comfy and friendly. What's not to love?

Why not go for the 20 bed mixed dorm????? .

My freind and I went to dublin and considered hostels, We were put off as we couldn't find any with private rooms left. The though of mied dorms makes me shudder, I wouldn't feel safe in my bed I have to say, we used to stay in hostels all over Scotland but strictly same sex or family rooms.

Their is a hostel right in the middle of New York that looks really good and I would consider that, the amaericans seem a loyt stricter than over here regards fire safety etc.

It does look very high tech for a YH and the best bit is the v fabby brand new kitchen which means that I can make a cup of tea before we have to do anything in the morning - it is my biggest bugbear with US hotels that they don't do in room kettles for morning tea! Can't wait now.

Any links and let us have a nose?

It's here . We're going to the city centre one and the Fisherman's Wharf staff were really unhelpful, we'd been told to steer clear of staying anywhere downtown and when I emailed the city centre folks they bent over backwards to be helpful. Attractive things - 24h access, key card entry to rooms, all linen is supplied, no chores (not that it would have mattered), we have adjoining double and twin room etc. I'm thinking now that it will (hopefully) be a more relaxing atmosphere than being in a hotel with the boys. If this works out then we'll be doing this with them for the foreseeable future and saving hotels for when dh and I can get away just the two of us. Fngers crossed.

I see that it is a Hosteling International one. In the Uk thats the Youth Hostel Association which doesn't include all the backpacker ones. The fishermans wharf one looks really good.
