This is what we were planning to do for our son's first birthday with his big sis. I've seen lots of recommendations for the science museum too. Anyone been to the zoo recently? Is it worth a look ?(we have an aunty, uncle and two grandmas to keep entertained at the same time!)

Went 3 weeks ago, just for a change as go to science museum all the time with her. Lots of things closed, the place is falling apart really! My DD would choose the science museum over the very cold zoo any day.

Even on a good day I don't think the Zoo is that interesting for very young kids. All they want to do is go on the merrygoround. They do tend to like the Aquarium. Also, at this time of year, a lot of the animals don't appear. The monkeys are good. The zoo has changed a lot as they've had to go much more in a conservation, medical treatment, breeding etc direction. We go quite often but we live nearby and have membership, I don't think I'd make a long trip unless it was summer AND its very expensive as a one-off trip.

We took my dd to a zoo for the first time when she was 18m and it was a real waste of time and money. She wasn't interested, was more interested in running on the grass and looking at the waste bins than the animals. I wouldn't recommend it for a first birthday, I have to say.

I went to the zoo with a 7,5,3 and 6 month old. It wasn't great to be honest. Although it depends on the relatives. My dad (65) found it hard going to be on his feet for so long. It's a stiff old walk from the tube too.

My ds felt cheated because there was no elephant. The lion was barely visible. The giraffes were great, but all in all it was a bit of a let down.

Sorry.

It's my sons first birthday tomorrow. Happy birthday to our ds's.

Thanks for the info. girls. I think we'll give it a miss. Maybe the science museum instead.
