I'm searching for a holiday for DH, me + 3 teenage boys (!!) so thought that Keycamp type thing in france would keep them happy. However, instead of long car journey (from NW) have consideered flying but bit concerned about not having a car at the other end. Anyone know of a campsite near an airport where you don't need a car? Thanks

We went La Carabasse with Siblu last year. It is within easy walking distance of Vias Plage - 10 mins - and the beach, and a huge fun fair. Lots of shops and restaurants. You can get the bus further afield if you want to. It is a short taxi trip from Beziers airport.

I'm also interested in this topic - any other suggestions ?

Interlude on the Ile de Re does euro camp and canvas. Fly to le rochelle and either taxi or bus across. You hire bikes and everything is within reach. Le rochelle has sqeasy jet too so should be cheapish

Bois Dormant or Bois Masson with Siblu in St Jeans de Mont can be reached by an airport shuttle bus that runs in the summer from Nantes airport. You could then rent a bike on site and use all the fan cycle tracks to get around.

Hi di123 and gingeroots, where in France were you planning on going?

makemineapinot · 02/02/2012 20:20

here is fantastic and only 40 odd mins in a bus from Venice marco Polo airport - there are /were some direct buses but if you have to change it's fine, the bus drivers all rally round, shouting in Italian and moving your bags for you! Alternatively the first time we went we got a taxi transfer which was around 80 euros. Campsite entrance is on main bus route from caorle (lovely town and worth a visit - with a big water park and about 20 mins away) and Venice so dead easy to go for a few day trips. Campsitea nd location are both fab - nearest town is 10 mins wlk throught he ine woods and has fantastic restaurants, shops, market etc. beach is beautiful, very safe and 5 mins walk.

We also went to Camping le Bois du valmarie in Argeles which was fantastic too but only downsides were that the site is hilly (amazing views from pools though as you are so high!) and that the beach is gritty not golden sand - but th pools are fantastic and we had a brilliant holiday. We flew with Ryanair to Perpignan whoch is only 20 km away (can get a train to Argeles then a taxi or get a taxi direct from airport - was 50 euros). Ryanair changed our flights so we ended up styaing in a hotel in perpignan the first night - ws actually really nice and we had a lovely time. Local transport is dead easy and it's a 10 min walk to the marina area with lovely restaurants, markets, sailing trips etc. Argeles plage is tat hevaena nd very touristy - you can wak or get the mini train.

I did both these campsites on my own as a single aprent with 2 children and they were hte easiest holidays ever!! Grin went back to Portofleice it was so good!

There is also Duinrell www.duinrell.nl which is amazing but you can't guarantee the weather. regular buses from Schipol.

Thank you so much makemineapinot ( which I read as make mine in a tea pot ! ) .
The Italian one looks tempting ,tho perhaps a little pricey ( but I think I'm expecting too much for too little ! ) - were the mosiquitos a problem ?

tim6587 - anywhere in Europe really ,probably more north than south I guess as family are not great with overheating - but coming to realise that if want good weather and some beach activity then it is going to be very hot .

I really must stop dithering and spending all waking hours on here and tripadvisor !

gingeroots · 03/02/2012 09:42

di123 - how's your decision process coming on ?

tim6587 · 03/02/2012 11:19

Have you thought about getting a hire car when you land, just thinking as makemineapinot said transfers can be 80 euros plus depending on where you intend on going. There are loads of options out there including flying to Nantes. From there you can get a train to the resort of St Hilaire de Riez which is lovely with Sol a Gogo being close by. The train journey can be booked through rail europe before you go.
I would seriously consider getting a hire car though. By the time you add in the cost of the transfers and not to mention the ease of going to the supermarket for food and days out its well worth it. We got one when we went abroad a few years ago and it only cost a couple of hundred pounds and we would have been lost without it.
If you fancy going a little further afield you could always give Spain a go. Cambrills Park is on the Costa Dorada and not far away from Reus. You can fly to Reus from most Uk airports so well worth a look. The campsite is only about 12km away so only about 20mins by car, taxi or bus

Hope it helps.

Grin gingerroots!! Portofelice is ace!! Well worth the money - price it with Selectcamp. And you def don't need a car - the supermarket on site was great and not a huge difference in price between it and the hypermarket. The bus is so cheap and very punctual.
