Self-catering in Croatia

I am just about to book holiday to Croatia. We are looking at 7 nights on Brac self catering, after flying into Split.

If anyone has done self-catering on the islands is it best to do a supermarket shop before you get on the ferry or once you arrive there? What are prices like? How close to the ferry terminal are the supermarkets?

If you want to do a mega-shop then its better on the mainland. My preference would be Spar in Kastel Sucurac (Mid way between the airport and the ferry port) because the range is better than most.

Corner shops are still alive and well in Croatia, so you can get anything you missed in the small shops on the island. Look for names like Tommy, Konzum, Mercator and Kerum (as these are the chains but they rarely say "supermarket" below).

Prices are fairly similar to the UK unless you shop in the outdoor markets which are better for fresh produce than the supermarkets. Pricing in the outdoor markets depends on how much the stall holders think they can get away with, so only go up to the stalls that clearly display pricing. If you do that, then the outdoor markets will be cheaper.

Restaurants are pretty cheap though so you may not end up doing much cooking.

I stayed in a hotel on one of the islands in 2010 and noticed the locals did their big shop at the supermarket near the ferry port on the mainland and then transported it to their homes on the island.
