Manchester Day Out

Would it be possible to do the following during a day out to Manchester by car, or is it too ambitious? We live just under an hour's drive away, and it would be on a weekday. Oh and we'd have two DC, 4 and 2 with us:

Plane spotting at the airport
Lunch and a bit of shopping at Trafford Centre
Science and Technology Museum [what's the parking situation here btw?]

I would guess it depends where you are coming in from, would you have to go by the airport to get to or from Manchester?
It probably is doable if you set off early enough and keep to a time scale. The Trafford Centre is about 15 mins from the Science Museum, if you are lucky you can park right outside the museum but there is quite a big car park near the arches across the road.
I would probably spend half a day at the science museum and the other half at the trafford centre and go plane spotting another day combining it with somewhere else nearby
