Premium Economy upgrade worth it?

We are off to New York in April. Virgin offers a return upgrade at a total cost of £1k, on top of a basic cost of £2k. There are five of us: me, other half who is 6'2", DSD, 12, DSS, 9 and DD, who will be 11 months. Return flight is overnight. Those who've travelled in Premium Economy, is it worth it?

Haven't done PE myself but ds did last time he went to the States and said it did make a difference. That was on United iirc

Business Class is much nicer though Wink Can't you go Business and let the rest of the family go economy Grin

I usually do. Slightly bigger seats, priority boarding, free drinks and fewer queues for the toilet makes it worthwhile for me ( I am easily pleased though).

I did it one way with a toddler (similar route). Life saver (compared with true economy on the way out). Personally, I'd save some cash by sending the 6'2" and the 11 month old in Premium Economy and have the rest slum it. The extra benefit is only worth it for the very wriggly or very tall!

Yes it is worth it esp for overnight trip

MollieO · 16/01/2012 19:47

Worth it for the overnight trip but not worth it, imho, for the daytime flight going out (unless it is incredibly cheap to do that leg too).

StiffyByng · 16/01/2012 19:48

I suggested sending the tall and wriggly up front but he is being chivalrous and saying it should be me. (Chivalrous or wanting to avoid two longish haul flights with the baby?Grin) It would be rather wasted on the kids though maybe.

Website is very random and sometimes quotes for separate leg upgrades at reasonable prices, sometimes at stupid prices and sometimes whole journey upgrades. The price changes every time!

don't forget the seat arms do not raise so you can't lie a little one flat out (as we often do in economy). only worth it on 9 hr plus flights/overnight imo

Just went to orlando on BA premium economy. DH is 6ft 9ins and makes a big difference to him so i would say do it if you can afford to.
