day out near a303 between andover and wincanton

We're travelling down to taunton from london on the friday of half term with a 2 year old and a 4 year old - both girls.
I'm looking for something to break the journey up. It only needs to keep us amused for a couple of hours so probably Longleat is too expensive for what we'd get out of it.
Also, the rac website suggests a303. Could this be a nightmare and M4/M5 be better, in which case any other suggestions would be v welcome.

The Hawk conservancy Andover its straight off the a303 and you woldn't have to pay for the dcs. Google it, its a great day out loads to do and really cheap. They have 3 flying displays a day there.

Traffic going that way on a Friday is always horrible, whichever route you take.

Finkley down farm? It's a very nice day out for children if that age.

Finkley down Farm closes during the winter, it reopens in march.

Great, thanks all. I've googled the hawk conservancy and it looks really interesting. My two are complete wooses (sp?) so they will be scared out of their minds but it's always good to try some therapy!!
