After what seems like a hundred itinerary shuffles it's finally booked

We are officially taking our two small children on a 40000 mile odyssey around the world. So if any of you have any brilliant travel tips for the following destinations I would love to hear them.

8th May - 15th June USA by Campervan
16th June - 29th June - a couple of weeks on the beach in Fiji
29th June - July 25th - a month in NZ, we hope to ski
July 25th - Aug 25th - a month in Australia
Aug 25th - Sep 25th - a month in China
Sep 25th - ?? South East Asia, for two or three months.

We are excited and terrified. Nappybaglady if you are around I would love to email you and get your perspective as your kids were the same age as mine.

Advice welcome

No advice...
but bloody good for you....

its an ordeal trying to get hubby to go anywhere .. let alone go round the world...

ambercat · 12/01/2006 18:05

I did the round the world thind pre kids,
think you are v. brave but also think you will have a fantastic time!
try to go to Fraser island on east coast oz, biggest sand island in the world. We went on a 4 wheel drive camping trip there, think kids would love it!

sunchowder · 12/01/2006 18:06

DeJags, this sound unbelievable!!! So great for you. Will you be in the Orlando FL area?

RTKangaMummy · 12/01/2006 18:18

where are you in

FIJI?

NZ ?

Ozzie ?

?

dejags · 12/01/2006 18:23

This is what we were hoping you could all help us with.

The only definites thus far are:

New York, San Francisco and LA in the USA
Fiji - nothing booked yet
New Zealand - we hope to ski, but don't have anything specific on the itinerary
Australia - Definitely Melbourne as we are thinking of moving there after this trip and the usual suspects, Cairns/Gt Barrier Reef/Sydney
China - we are booked for 10 days in Beijing and will be taking the sleeper train to Hong Kong from Shanghai.
South East Asia - must see's include Angkor Wat (Cambodia), Perhentian Islands in Malaysia.

So we are open to suggestions, fire away.

Wow! Have a great time and don't forget to keep us up to date with some 'postcards' to MN!

dejags · 12/01/2006 18:28

Amber, re. being brave - some nights I wake up in a sweat worrying about what the kids will be like. I think we will be ok though - DS1 is great and really flexible, DS2 slightly less so but we are training him to sleep anywhere (with some success ) so hopefully in 3.5 months time he will be used to moving beds.

We need to make some changes in our lives - are careers just aren't making us happy and we were hasty in our move to South Africa, so this is our opportunity to take a step back and evaluate.

Not sure if we'll end up evaluating the inside of a Psych ward but we'll give it a bash anyway

Sorry, should have said, Bali is fab for relaxation and culture. Borobodur and Prambanan, near Yogyakarta on Java are fabulous if you like antiquities and you can also go up a live volcana in the area. Garuda Air do flights between Bali/Java.

chicagomum · 12/01/2006 18:30

QUick hijack for dejags, pop over here when you have a mo english package .

ghosty · 12/01/2006 18:30

Obviously you will come and meet me in NZ dejags
CAT me for my email address if you want and perhaps if you have a couple of days in Auckland before you go off skiing we could meet up ... no snow in Auckland unfortunately ...

dejags · 12/01/2006 18:33

Thanks Ghosty - definitely will do!

I'll have a look at those Suedonim - and report back.

Dejags

FANTASTIC

Can't believe you posted today. Have BIG job interview tomorrow. Should not be on MN at all but needed a bit of light relief from reading more NHS policy documents. Am away this weekend but will definitely post next week. In meantime post or CAT any specific things

Am hoping that my interview dissolves into a long chat about my holiday adventures...

Are you planning to drive West-East across USA or tour West, fly across and tour East?

RTKangaMummy · 19/01/2006 23:51

it is right on the beach - other side of the pool

there are deffo brill hammocks in those trees

bobbybobbobbingalong · 20/01/2006 05:27

Christchurch is nearer the skiing than Ghosty so you should come to a Christchurch meet up. Reminds me I have to organise the Christhchurch meetup - off to do it now.

dejags · 20/01/2006 07:44

That would be great Bobby .

RTKM - looks absolutely FABULOUS but a bit too expensive on our meagre budget I am afraid.

We are looking at much more modest accomodation, but I may be able to persuade DH to change his mind for a few weeks.

It has just occured to me that I need to give my notice in at work in less than 2 months. And that it's only 14 weeks until we go.

I have given a terms notice at DS1's school and requested some of his teachers time for her to tutor me on what schoolwork he needs to cover while we are away. She is being fab and preparing a slimline folder of everything. I aim to do "school" type stuff for three hours a week while we are away.

We have started thinking about what we will do with our house - currently thinking of holiday lets with a manager or a straight forward let.

All our passports are up to scratch and I think we only need one visa (china) and I have made an appointment with a travel clinic to have vaccinations at the end of the month.

So much to think about, excuse my ramblings.
