s/c cottage on Mull - all mod coms required!

We started talking about Pembrokeshire, and it appears dh has set his heart on Mull.

Has anyone got a personal recommendation of s/c cottage (to sleep 4)?

We like our comforts and want something nice, rather than something cheap. Probably in the vicinity of Tobermory rather than out in the sticks.
But not part of a complex or anything that would require us to be sociable

Apologies for typo in the title
Any suggestions?

we stayed at Glengorm Castle when we went in June.It was fab and really recommend it. here

roisin · 10/01/2006 21:49

Thanks Milge - it looks brilliant, just the sort of thing we're looking for. I'm going to email for availability.

Are they child-friendly? (My boys are 6 and 8, so not tiny tots or anything.)

Is there anything you didn't like about the place?

Did you stay B&B in the castle or in one of the cottages? If so, which one.

We stayed SC in the castle. Its v child friendly, huge gardens, an adult sized trampoline(no side netting, but bark underneath), plus swings/slide/wooden climbing frame/sandpit. Only 10 mins( down a perilous cliff top drive) to Tobermory and the Co-op. Also stocked up in Tescos in Oban before we caught the ferry.

roisin · 10/01/2006 22:11

A trampoline and swings and stuff?! They don't even mention that on the website.

That's it, I want to go now!

Looking at the website has made me want to go back now, too!
We stayed in the Terrace flat. Glengorm supply most of the beef for the island, and have a fab farm shop, a bit like the Daylesford and Wellington estate farm shops - absolutely to die for! Take lots of luggage. We have glengorm beef in our freezer still that I ordered when we were there and they sent on in a vacubox.

Thanks again Milge - we've booked one of the cottages for a week in August

I hope we have as great a time as you did.

Roisin - that looks fantastic. I would love a holiday there and intend to show DH tonight. We are looking for somewhere at Easter and it looks perfect.

roisin · 11/01/2006 16:59

Do move fast yoyo! We wanted one of the larger (3 bed) cottages, and they were only free for 2 wks of the school summer hols

Dh has ordered OS maps of Mull, and the boys are really excited. It's great to have something to look forward to, and make the working seem worthwhile!

I have emailed for availability at Easter Roisin! I think it will take us forever to get there though. I have never been anywhere near (went to Edinburgh when I was about 12) but it looks just the sort of place we'd love. Might try and sell it to DH by flying to Edinburgh and hiring a car - getting rather expensive then though.

Bink · 11/01/2006 17:22

roisin this is spooooky yet again (it's me binkie) - we'll be there for a week in the summer but I think it's July not August. Will do you an e-mail.

It's a glorious place - many idyllic summers there when I was little.

Milge · 11/01/2006 17:29

Will Glengorm give me discount for our next trip for drumming up all this business on MN for them? Most jealous of you going there - i hope it doesn't disappoint. We loved it and i hope you enjoy it too Roisin.

roisin · 11/01/2006 19:21

I think you deserve a discount Milge!
Binkie
Were we separated at birth?! These similarities are becoming rather disconcerting.

I have just asked about a week at Easter too yoyo! Let's keep our collective fingers crossed

It looks fab, thanks Milge, just what we were looking for.

roisin · 12/01/2006 02:14

Could you check back here if/when you've booked Tamum, and Yoyo? If we have all booked, then maybe MN Towers would want to contact them to see if they would consider offering a competition prize next year, or some advertising with mn or something?

Roisin - what were you doing up at 2 am?

Thay haven't yet replied to my email so will ring them later. DH was very grumpy last night and not enthusiatic but I will corner him again tonight.

LO Tobermory is the sticks , well at least it has a Co-op.

yoyo · 13/01/2006 09:53

Roisin - they can't do the dates we wanted unfortunately but DH is interested so may look for Autumn half term. Apparently it wouls take us 12 hours according to the AA! I wonder if I could travel separately?

tamum · 13/01/2006 11:53

We're going at Easter, hurrah! That's s shame you won't be there then, yoyo. The AA reckon 5.5 hours from here (Edinburgh), but that seems to include hanging around for the ferry. I think it will be about 3 hours from here, then the ferry, then another half hour or so? Your idea of flying to Edinburgh seems sensible really yoyo. Glasgow might be even better though, I guess.

I'm really looking forward to it

yoyo · 13/01/2006 12:19

Tamum - I have just contacted them again to see if they have anything for wk beginning 8 April. I doubt it though!

tamum · 13/01/2006 12:41

We are going on the 1st, they didn't seem to have anything for the 8th- I'll keep my fingers crossed for you though

Bink · 13/01/2006 15:01

yoyo, the place we're going (first week of August, roisin, it turns out - will we cross paths?? Of course it's far the other side of the island) is here - it has some self-catering.

tamum · 13/01/2006 15:05

That place is on my list of restaurants to visit, binkie. It looks lovely- so does that whole area, actually.

Bink · 13/01/2006 15:10

Yes, that bit of the island is lovely - that's where we had our idyllic summers when little (not in that hotel, it didn't exist relevant number of decades ago).

Calgary Bay sand is like white caster sugar.

Other side of the bay there is a burn which pours over in waterfalls, last one being over a cliff into the sea (it's probably only 10 feet high of course, childhood memories, sigh - anyway) and above the cliff & at the foot of the waterfalls is a deep pool for swimming we used to spend days in.

Can't wait to visit Iona properly, this time - never appreciated it then.
