We started talking about Pembrokeshire, and it appears dh has set his heart on Mull.

Has anyone got a personal recommendation of s/c cottage (to sleep 4)?

We like our comforts and want something nice, rather than something cheap. Probably in the vicinity of Tobermory rather than out in the sticks.
But not part of a complex or anything that would require us to be sociable

sorry roisin, still working on the problem. If dh doesn't fix it tonight I'll send it from his email address

Miaou · 17/01/2006 15:13

Should have it now, roisin

Did you see Mull on the TV this evening? It was fab: Whale watching and sea eagles.

Dh is very keen to go on a whale watching boat, but I'm not sure the boys will really have the patience; and I'm sure they'll be devastated if they don't see one. I'd rather go on a general boat trip, with a hope of seeing something - seals, dolphins, whales, birds, sea eagles ... whatever! What do you reckon?

Dh actually has racked up a list of 4 boat trips he wants to go on - in a week! I reminded him recently how green he looked on a little boat when we went to Turkey, and it wasn't really that rough - just the day after a storm!

You are going in August aren't you? Then you will definitely see something if you went out in a boat. Staying at Tobermory you will be well placed to take a trip out too.

Best people to go with are Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust - dh is pretty sure that they do 4 hour as well as day trips, and that they may possibly stop off at places en route. They have a little office/shop on the high street in Tob - you can just go in and book! Just the experience of being on a boat will keep the boys amused I should think. I've been on a day trip to Tob (from Muck when I lived there) with a two year old and he was quite happy, there's just so much to see.

Our veg delivery people are doing a special on these lovely biscuits made in Mull . Website is charming & informative about Mull generally, too.

Now for another chocolate ginger.

Miaou - in answer to your Q on the other thread - I think we've decided to stay at McGregor's landing: seems just what we want thanks. I'm not sure whether dh has booked it yet or not.

Well, we got back yesterday, so I am reporting in as requested. It was wonderful- the cottage was lovely (especially once we got the heating sorted out), and I was really impressed with the whole Glengorm set-up. The lunches were wonderful, much better than anything else we had in Tobermory. Calgary was spectacularly beautiful, thanks Binkie, and I would really recommend the Calgary Art in Nature walk. We went on a two hour boat trip with Sea Life Surveys, who are a sister organisation to the one Miaou linked to. The weather was atrocious that day, gale force winds, snow, horizontal sleet, but I still enjoyed it. The blokes who ran it were wonderful and stopped the boat to give us hot chocolate half way through. They do lots of different length trips- we didn't see any porpoises, though they had that morning, but we saw seals, and the salmon farm, and a cave in Bloody Bay, and a waterfall.

Thanks to Milge, very much, for recommending Glengorm, and hope the rest of you have a wonderful summer there :)

Thanks for the review. I can't wait!

How were your children on the boat trip in rough weather?

Dh and the boys want to go on loads of boat trips, and I'm urging caution. Firstly because dh was very ill in Turkey when it wasn't particularly rough (just the day after a storm), but also because I think the boys would be bored sat on a boat for hours at a time waiting to catch a glimpse of a distant whale!

Dh has booked us all on a 4-hr Wildlife Adventure trip with \link{http://www.sealifesurveys.com/EZEdit/view.asp?MID=68\Sea Life Surveys} on the day after we arrive!

Apparently if we enjoy/behave ourselves we will also go on a trip to Staffa and a fishing trip! Dh also wants us all to go to Iona for a day. Is it really just a week we're going for? I can't wait!

Sorry roisin, only just saw your last post. The children were fine on the boat, but they and I had taken travel sickness pills. I am usually far worse than them, but I was fine as long as I was on the top (open) deck. When we went down for hot choc I started to feel really bad. We all found that being frozen to the marrow took our minds off sickness :o

I would do the 4 hour trip next time, I think, having seen the boat and realised it's possible to be facing forwards in the open. They also have toilets, another attractive feature if you prefer not being sick in front of people. The Staffa trip we looked at required really quite a long drive to the other side of the island (about an hour on windy roads), then 1.5 hours on the boat, 1 hour on the island, another 1.5 hours back and then the drive again. I felt that was beyond the call of duty, but I think Staffa would be well worth seeing.

One thing I forgot to mention- the tap water is very brown in the cottages (ours, at any rate), so be prepared to buy some bottled stuff for drinking!

tamum · 11/04/2006 19:01

I should specify- I mean roads that wind, not the type of weather!

milge · 11/04/2006 19:24

Gosh, I have only just seen this - so glad you had a great time tamum. We did the staffa and iona trip and it was a very long day, but the weather was perfect. Oh, I want to go back! Was a bit worried that my recommendation would turn out to be duff, am mightily relieved you enjoyed yourself.

tamum · 11/04/2006 19:45

We are forever in your debt Milge- it was fantastic, and I had never heard of Glengorm before you recommended it, so thank you very much :) :) We will go again, I'm sure.

rosaparks · 19/08/2006 21:07

THANK YOU Milge, Tamum, Miaou, Binkie, and anyone else who offered advice. We have just got back and had a fabulous time. We have completely fallen in love with Mull, and are hoping to book next year's holiday in the next day or so!

The weather was fantastic, which helped, but the wildlife was just breath-taking. We've seen so much (mostly spotted by ourselves without aid from experts) that it would bore you to list it all here!

The 4-hr boat trip was wonderful: a real highlight - I loved watching all the birds, and the staff were very friendly.
The cottage was perfect - really cosy and lovely - just what we wanted.

The staff at Craignure Tourist Info are wonderful. The boys did "The Quest", and the staff were amazingly enthusiastic and chatty. It's a bit of a trek down there if you're not doing the Oban ferry, but it's worth it.
Miaou, Sorry we just missed you and didn't get to meet up - next year!

roisin · 19/08/2006 21:09

Err.. sorry, that was me btw
Roisin
