We stayed in a hotel called Thirty Thirty - near the Empire State Building, so v central.

It was just fine for what we needed - the rooms aren't big and kind of modern mimimalist decoration, but clean and comfortable. We spent so little time in there anyway.

I wanted to go for a week and dh said if we can do it for £1000 for both of us then we were off!!

He booked the flights and hotel with ebookers.com.

Obviously this didn't include any food (we stayed on a room only basis), but it still seemed like good value.

I have stayed at the new york helmsley on 42nd st. it wasnt cheap but not many hotels in newyork are.

spacedonkey · 08/01/2006 21:08

I stayed at The Kitano - mid town near the Empire State - not cheap either, but central, quiet and well-appointed

PrincessPeaHead · 08/01/2006 21:19

The Alex.
Fantastic quiet midtown location, big rooms (v rare in New York)(some with kitchens!), plasma screens in living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms (!), white Frette sheets, dark wood beds etc - whole effect fresh and modern without being superminimalist-uncomfy. And really pretty good value (much better than Mercer etc etc with their tiny rooms.)

Soapbox or someone here recommended it to me and it was fab.

Avoid all the oldies - Helmsley etc - their lobbies are OK but the rooms are universally horrible, tired, yukky carpets, over heated etc etc

elastamum · 08/01/2006 21:21

We stayed in the Westin at times square. I asked for a high room and we got a corner on the south / hudson side could see the staue of liberty from our bed. It was fab!

velcrobott · 08/01/2006 21:42

PPH - thanks .... $429 a room, now I am happy to spend $300 but $429 is a tad steep ;-)

Am looking into all the other ideas

oh sorry about that - have you looked on expedia and travelocity? the Alex always seems to have good deals going (but maybe not at the mo) - I agree, I wouldn't pay rack rate either.

I think I paid $350 for an enormous 1 bed suite with kitchen and dining room etc when I went (dh company picked up the tab) - but more normal rooms were cheaper.

PrincessPeaHead · 09/01/2006 08:15

I did a random expedia search for the weekend of the 28th of Jan and it came up with £160 per night for a deluxe room - not bad I don't think!!
Have a look

This is fab guys... thanks!
DH started looking at B&Bs in greenwich - not cheap and apparantly quite posh but that might be fun too !

Broadway Inn

We stayed here, it was 7 years ago, it is very central, the only drawback being there was no lift, but you can not get much closer to the action.

It is basically a B&B, they give you a small continetal breakfast in the mornings.
