I'm sure I've read somewhere that certain destinations demand that you have at least 6 months left on your passport or you can't travel to them. is this right? How can I find out?

look at webite for country you are planning on going to. many ask fo 6 months

definitely true for the USA

but if you get to the passport office and renew it now, all will be ok, as it'll just carry on, but you'll have to go out of your way, or risk it being late thru the post....

means a 2 hour hike up to london which is a grim thought

If you get it into the passport office now it should have plenty of time. Use their High Street Partner scheme?

They will add any complete months to your new passports e.g. if you apply now, March and Feb will be added to the new 10 year passport, making it valid for 10y 2mo, IIRC.

6 month rule true for Australia last time I checked.

Six months after returning from the country in question is pretty much standard.

Have a look at www.passport.gov.uk.

Would basically get the passport renewed asap, use the fast track service.

If you are not travelling within the next two weeks there is no need to personally visit the passport office.
