Nice Restaurants in Manchester

I've been given a challenge by my lovely boyfriend. Basically, he wants to take me out for the day to celebrate my birthday, so doing "something" then a meal out. We live in a city where there isn't much to do, and can get to Manchester easily and without much expense.

So I was thinking of going ice skating at the Spinningfields ice rink then going for a meal somewhere. But I don't go out for meals very often, other than to pubs, and need some help finding a reasonably priced place, but one that feels a bit special, iyswim? We like most things but do like a nice Chinese or Indian meal :) Also welcome any suggestions of other things to do apart from skating :)

There is Shimla Pinks for indian food, i've only been the once but it was good and lots of people say it's good. Very close to spinngfields.
For chinese there is Yang Sing...one of the best chinese restaurants in the UK I think. It's in chinatown which is about 10min walk from spinningfields.
Spinningfields itself has Giraff, Carluccios, chainy type places etc, nothing special though.

Also near spinningfields is el rincon de rafa , a great spanish tapas place, always very busy and great atmosphere. But they don't do bookings for 2 people. YOu have to wait for a table. But they have a nice bar too, so if you have time then I'd really recommend it.

enjoy!
