Is it true the law is changing about booster seats???

I have just gotten the new mothercare catalogue and in the car seat section, there is a little note to say that the law is due to change in May 2006 that it will be illegal for an under 11 year old to travel in the car without a car seat / booster seat.

I cannot find anymore information on this, has anybody else hear about it?

yes thats about the size of it

I think its done on height rather than age so if you have a very tall child you might get away with it earlier

Its not a problem for me at the moment as my DD is only 12 weeks old so car seats are a must. But I have a couple of friends who have got young kids, one has a 3 year old and an 7 year old, and another has a 10 year old, but none of them have booster seats etc. (It especially bugs me with the 3 and 7 year old). At least now when I refuse to drive the kids around without a car seat, I'll have legality on my side rather than just preachyness!!

Excellent. Now I have the law on my side and can look smug when I get accused of over-protectiveness for still putting my almost 9 year old in a car seat Also good because I'm sure he is getting to the age when he will question why he has to go in it - I think very few of his peers still have a seat/booster.

LOL myrrhthamoo. I feel the same way!
In the summer when I was still pregnant me and my DH went out for the day in our car, and a friend of ours joined us with his wife and two kids in their van. It was a while into the day that I found out that all three of them had sat in the front of the van, his DW holding their two year old, and the seven year old in the seat next to her, no booter seats or anything.
When it came to going home, we were going to mine and my friend suggested that him and my DH went off in his van to get the food we needed while I took his DW and DD's to my house in my car. He was so annoyed that I wouldn't because they didnt have a car seat. His logical sentence was that they didnt have a car seat in the van so either way they were going to travel without a seat. I couldn't believe he couldn't see my issue, that I'd never be able to live with myself if I'd been in an accident and they'd been hurt because I'd driven with no seats.
