Now Christmas is over and done with I am trying too secretly book dh's 40th birthday trip in June. He would love to take a trip to Scotland and visit Loch Ness and a distillery (hmmm) plus he actually quite likes trains. The children and I will go too so will turn it into our main holiday so will need to travel during the May half term hols. Can anyone recommend a nice hotel (not really pricey but nice) in either of these areas.

yes, The Clansman, which overlooks the shores of Loch Ness. It has very big windows so you can see out, a dining area, if you so wish to dine there in the evening. My hubbie and I loved it there and it was not heaving with people like some places are. As for cost a few years ago it was about £40 each a night, it might have gone up a little since then, but I would still highly recommend it. Congratulations on your hubbie reaching 40!
