We are breaking down the trip into two days and were looking for a nice place to stay either 2-4 hours drive away from Calais on our way towards Vannes. We have 4 and 6 yr old dc so would need to be child-friendly. Don't mind whether it is B and b or hotel - just want somewhere nice and not too expensive!

Novotel at Rouen Sud. Family rooms, kids get free breakfast, decent childrens's menu that allows to choose vegetables. Indoor play area, outdoor playground and pool (depending on when you travel) You can normally get excellent dinner, b&b rates if you book a package in advance.

Looks nice but we were thinking of finding a charming small place with good food

I looked for same and didn't find. Try the Alasdair Sawdays Special places in france. Easily googleable.

We stayed here for a couple of nights and it was lovely. Think it's restaurant is award-winning, but we weren't that impressed. Having said that all food in Normandy is yummy.
Good stop off for visiting Arromanche and Bayeux

it looks just the type of place we are looking for but a bit too far off the A84 which is the road we will be taking
