Warning to Londoners flying out of Gatwick

Just thought I'd post a friendly/helpful warning to Londoners flying out of Gatwick.

DD and I went from central London by car yesterday (thinking it would be easier as we had several big/heavy cases), and were horrified as we watched the minutes tick away while we were crawled along in bumper to bumper traffic. There is major construction on the A23. The roadworks cause 2 lanes each way to go down to one, and then to only one lane for traffic going both ways. The tailbacks went on for miles and miles - and I'm not exaggerating. We went from thinking we'd have lots of time to shop duty free/grab a bite to eat, etc to almost missing our flight. There wasn't an empty seat on the plane, (and their had been quite a few empty seats when I called to confirm flights the night before) as all were filled with people who had missed earlier flights due to the roadworks (and a bad accident on the M25).

So - plan your trip to Gatwick carefully, and if at all possible, take the train....

Yes, well....must think of my online friends!

Actually - it's 3.30 in the morning here, and I'm wide awake, as my body is still on UK time....so, what else am I going to do? Also, am in a house with computer access - so not quite like being in a hotel....!!

Thanks for the warning Earlybird - we fly from Gatwick next friday. Where were the roadworks? Coulsdon maybe? Or further north?
Hope you have a nice holiday. Are you somewhere warm?

podkin · 15/12/2005 17:38

they are in Coulsdon. If you can get to Jn 8 of the m25 instead and then come to jn 9 and then M23 to Gatwick, you will avoid it.

LIZS · 15/12/2005 17:45

Coulsdon is a nightmare atm - took us well over 45 minutes to get from M25 into Croydon on a weekday mid morning last week. Also around Gatwick they are resurfacing to create a bus lane and it goes down from two lanes to one.

bumping for those preparing to fly out....

agree - Coulsdon is a traffic nightmare at the moment as they are in the middle of building a flyover there; most people drive thru it to get to gatwick. the A23 is the main route London to Brighton

If you're taking the A23 to Gatwick then when you get to Purley Cross take A22 down to jn 6 of the M25 and then back onto M23 at Junction 7.
